The alb is a white liturgical vestment, worn over the torso coming down to the ankles and is often girdled with a cincture. It is worn over the cassock, and underneath a stole, dalmatic, or a chasuble.

An Alb

The etymology of the term comes from the Latin albus, meaning "white".

Use in Anglicanism

The alb was historically associated with Roman Catholicism, but has gained some use among Anglo-Catholics, who have replaced the traditional surplice with an alb.
