An Exposition of the Creed (Pearson)
An Exposition of the Creed
By John Pearson, D.D., Lord Bishop of Chester. First published 1659 (London). This page is the work-level landing page for the AnglicanWiki transcription project: it names the sections transcribed so far, each in its own edition, with its own edition metadata, page references, and proofreading status. Editions are never combined within a single transcription.
John Pearson's Exposition of the Creed is a commentary on the Apostles' Creed, article by article. Its first article — I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth — is an analysis of belief itself before the Creed's particular articles are reached: what I believe means, what Faith is as an act of the understanding, how Human and Divine Faith differ, and what it is for a thing to be credible.
Sections transcribed so far
1. Preface, "To the Reader" — 1821 edition
Transcription in preparation; not yet published.
- Edition: the 1821 Dove edition of the Exposition.
- Content: Pearson's Preface "To the Reader" (1,449 words).
2. Article I, "I believe" — Burton 1877 edition
Exposition of the Creed, Article I (Pearson, 1877) — published; second proofread complete.
- Edition (this section only): An Exposition of the Creed.
By John Pearson, D.D., Lord Bishop of Chester. Revised and corrected by the Rev. E. Burton, D.D., Regius Professor of Divinity and Canon of Christ Church. SIXTH EDITION. Oxford, at the Clarendon Press, MDCCCLXXVII (1877). Title-page wording and date read from the scan image itself.
- Content: Article I, "I believe" — printed pp. 1–45 only.
This is NOT the whole of Article I: the article runs to
printed p. 122 (see "Continuation" below), and this section
ends mid-discussion on p. 45, on the title of Father ("so
the title of Father is given unto divers persons or things,
and for several reasons unto the same").
- Proofreading: second proofread complete against 300 dpi
renders of the Project Canterbury scan (https://anglicanhistory.org/pearson/creed/article01a.pdf). All 16 first-round flags resolved; marginal Scripture references complete for all pages (including pp. 18–31, recovered at second proofread — 32 references); the three mid-sentence page junctions (pp. 3→4, 17→18, 31→32) re-confirmed. Full proofread record held with the project files.
- Source pages: 24 thumbnails (title page and spreads) in the gallery on the section page.
Continuation (not yet transcribed)
Article I continues beyond p. 45. Its true end, verified against the continuation scans in this round, is printed p. 122, where Article I closes ("…and in this full latitude, I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.") and Article II ("And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.") begins on the same page. The continuation is covered by two further Project Canterbury files, neither transcribed yet:
- article01b.pdf — printed pp. 45–85
(https://anglicanhistory.org/pearson/creed/article01b.pdf)
- article01c.pdf — printed pp. 84–122
(https://anglicanhistory.org/pearson/creed/article01c.pdf)
The joins overlap by design (p. 45 in both a and b; pp. 84–85 in both b and c). Local copies are held with the pilot files for the future transcription round.
Edition separation
The two sections above are in different editions and must never be merged into one text: the Preface is 1821, the Article I section is Burton 1877. Each section carries its own edition metadata, page references, and source documentation. A reader comparing the two should expect wording and annotation differences between editions; neither is corrected from the other.
