Vigil of Pentecost

Station at St. John Lateran.

The Office having been said, the Priest and ministers, vested in purple, go up to the Altar, and after the reverence, the Priest kisses it in the centre. Then are read the Prophecies without title, the candles of the Altar being unlighted up to the beginning of the Mass, as on Holy Saturday. The Priest reads them in a low voice at the Epistle Corner of the Altar. At the end of the Prophecies are said the Collects without Let us bow the knee.

PROPHECY THE FIRST. Gen. 22. 1–19. In those days: God did tempt Abraham. As on Holy Saturday, Prophecy 3.

Which ended, the Priest says:

Let us pray. COLLECT.

O GOD, who in the works of Abraham thy servant hast sanctified a pattern of obedience to all mankind: grant us so to conquer the perversity of our desires, that we may in all things fulfil the righteousness of thy commandments. Through.

PROPHECY THE SECOND. Exod. 14. 24 to 15. 1. In those days: It came to pass that in the morning watch. As on Holy Saturday, Prophecy 4, with the Tract, We will sing unto the Lord.

Let us pray. COLLECT.

O GOD, who by the light of thy new covenant hast made manifest thy wonders wrought in former times, shewing in the Red Sea a pattern of the waters of baptism, and in the deliverance of thy people from bondage in Egypt foreshadowing the sacraments of thy Christian people: grant that all nations, being admitted by the merit of their faith to the privilege of Israel, may be regenerated by the partaking of the Holy Spirit. Through . . .

PROPHECY THE THIRD. Deut. 31. 22–30. In those days: Moses therefore wrote this song. As on Holy Saturday, Prophecy 11, with the Tract, Give ear, O ye heavens.

Let us pray. COLLECT.

O GOD, who art the glory of the faithful and the life of the righteous; who likewise by Moses thy servant hast taught us to sing songs of praise unto thee: accomplish in all nations the work of thy mercy, granting them felicity, and delivering them from all terror: that those things which were uttered for a warning of thy vengeance may be made profitable for our healing unto life everlasting. Through.

PROPHECY THE FOURTH. Isaiah 4. 1–6. And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man. As on Holy Saturday, Prophecy 8, with the Tract, My well-beloved hath a vineyard.

Let us pray. COLLECT.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who in thine only-begotten Son hast revealed thyself to be the husbandman of thy Church, who dost mercifully purge every branch that bringeth forth fruit in the true vine, even the same Christ thy Son, to the intent that it may bring forth more fruit: we pray thee that the thorns and briars of sin may not prevail against thy faithful people, whom by the waters of baptism thou hast brought like a vine out of Egypt; that being confirmed by the sanctifying power of thy Holy Spirit, they may evermore bring forth fruit in abundance. Through . . . in the unity of the same Spirit.

PROPHECY THE FIFTH. Baruch 3. 9–37. Hear, Israel, the commandments of life. As on Holy Saturday, Prophecy 6.

Let us pray. COLLECT.

O GOD, who by the mouths of thy prophets hast commanded us to leave behind us all things temporal, and to strive earnestly after things eternal: grant that we thy servants, knowing those things thou commandest, by thy heavenly inspiration may be enabled to perform the same. Through.

PROPHECY THE SIXTH. Ezech. 37. 1–14. In those days: The hand of the Lord was upon me. As on Holy Saturday, Prophecy 7.

Let us pray. COLLECT.

O LORD GOD OF HOSTS, who restorest those things that are broken down, and preservest those things that thou restorest: increase, we pray thee, the peoples that shall be regenerated in the sanctification of thy Name; that they that are washed in the waters of baptism may in all things be guided by thy inspiration. Through.

¶ These ended, the Celebrant puts on a purple cope, and, while he descends to the font, the following is sung:

TRACT. Ps. 42. Like as the hart desireth the water-brooks: so longeth my soul after thee, O God. ℣. My soul is athirst for the living God: when shall I come to appear before the presence of God? ℣. My tears have been my meat day and night, while they daily say unto me: Where is now thy God?

Then the Priest, before he enters the Baptistry to bless the font, says:

℣. The Lord be with you. ℟. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray. COLLECT.

GRANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God: that we which here observe the day whereon thou didst send forth thy Holy Spirit, may in such wise be influenced with heavenly desires that we may ever thirst for the waters of life. Through . . . in the unity of the same Spirit.

Then he proceeds to bless the font, as on Holy Saturday.

¶ But where there be no font, after the 6th Prophecy with its Collect the Celebrant lays aside the Chasuble, and prostrates himself before the Altar with the ministers: and all the others kneeling, the Litany is sung by two cantors in the middle of the Choir, both Choirs making together the same response. But when they come to We sinners do beseech thee to hear us, O Lord the Priest and ministers rise, and going to the sacristy, put on red vestments, and the lights around the Altar are lighted. At the end of the Litany the Kyrie eleison is sung solemnly for the Mass, and repeated as usual. And this having been begun, the Priest with the ministers proceeds to the Altar, and makes the Confession: then, going up, he kisses the Altar, and incenses it in the accustomed way. The Kyrie eleison being finished, Glory be to God on high is solemnly begun, and the bells are rung.

COLLECT.

GRANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that the splendour of thy glory may in such wise shine forth upon us: that brightness of thy light may by the illumination of thy Holy Spirit strengthen the hearts of them which through thy grace are born again. Through . . . in the unity of the same Spirit.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Acts of the Apostles. Acts 19. 1.

IN those days: It came to pass that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, he said unto them: Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him: We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them: Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said: Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul: John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people: That they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And all the men were about twelve. And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.

Alleluia. ℣. Ps. 107. O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is gracious: and his mercy endureth for ever.

Alleluia is not repeated, but there immediately follows:

TRACT. Ps. 117. O praise the Lord, all ye heathen: praise him all ye nations. ℣. For his merciful kindness is ever more and more towards us: and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever.

At the Gospel lights are not carried, but incense only.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to John. St. John 14. 15.

AT that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him. But ye know him: for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while; and the world seeth me no more. But ye see me, because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me. And he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father; and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. The Creed is not said.

THE Spirit of the Lord hath filled the whole world, alleluia: and that which containeth all things hath knowledge of the voice, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Ps. 68. Let God arise, and let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him. ℣. Glory be.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Acts of the Apostles. Acts 2. 1.

WHEN the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place: and suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind: and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues, like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them: and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed, and marvelled, saying one to another: Behold, are not all these which speak Galileans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews, and Proselytes, Cretes, and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 104. O send forth thy Spirit, and they shall be made: and thou shalt renew the face of the earth. Alleluia. (Here genuflect.) ℣. Come, Holy Ghost, and fill the hearts of thy faithful people: and kindle in them the fire of thy love.

SEQUENCE. Veni Sancte Spiritus.

COME, thou Holy Spirit, come; and from thy celestial home send thy light and brilliancy. Come, thou father of the poor, come who givest all our store, come the soul's true radiancy. Come, of comforters the best, of the soul the sweetest guest, sweetly and refreshingly. Come, in labour rest most sweet, shade and coolness in the heat, comfort in adversity. Thou who art the Light most blest, come fulfil their inmost breast, who believe most faithfully. For without thy Godhead's dower, man hath nothing in his power, save to work iniquity. What is filthy make thou pure, what is wounded work its cure, water what is parched and dry. Gently bend the stubborn will, warm to life the heart that's chill, guide who goeth erringly. Fill thy faithful who adore, and confess thee evermore, with thy sevenfold mystery. Here thy grace and virtue send, grant salvation in the end, and in heaven felicity. Amen. Alleluia.

And this is said daily until the following Saturday inclusive.

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, (not Iscariot): Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him: If a man love me, he will keep my words, and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him: he that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings. And the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my Name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Ye have heard how I said unto you: I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father; for my Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it come to pass: that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the Prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Creed.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Acts of the Apostles. Acts 10. 34.

IN those days: Peter opened his mouth, and said: Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons; but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. The Word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ; (he is Lord of all;) that Word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost, and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed with the devil; for God was with him. And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. To him give all the prophets witness, that through his Name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision, which believed, were astonished, as many as came with Peter: because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter: Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the Name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Acts 2. The Apostles spake with divers tongues the wonderful works of God, alleluia. (Here genuflect.) ℣. Come, Holy Ghost, and fill the hearts of thy faithful people: and kindle in them the fire of thy love.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to John. St. John 3. 16.

AT that time: Jesus said unto Nicodemus: God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son: that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already: because he hath not believed in the Name of the only-begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation: that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light: because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved: but he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. AT that time: Jesus said unto the Pharisees: Verily, verily I say unto you: he that entereth not by the door into the sheep-fold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter openeth, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. And, when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. This parable spake Jesus unto them. But they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them. Then said Jesus unto them again: Verily, verily I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door. By me if any man enter in, he shall be saved: and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. The Creed is said.

IN those days: Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them: Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words. For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day: but this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel: And it shall come to pass in the last days, (saith God,) I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit, and they shall prophesy: and I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke. The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Acts of the Apostles. Acts 5. 12.

IN those days: By the hands of the Apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch. And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them. And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women, insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.

Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father. Verily, verily, I say unto you: he that believeth on me hath everlasting life. I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven: that a man may eat thereof, and not die. The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Acts of the Apostles. Acts 8. 5.

IN those days: Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them. And many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed. And there was great joy in that city.

Amen. Alleluia.

And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart. And whosoever will not receive you: when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them. And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the Gospel, and healing every where. The Creed is said.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 5. 17.

AT that time: It came to pass on a certain day, as Jesus was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the house-top, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. And when he saw their faith, he said unto him: Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying: Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone? But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them: What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say: Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say: Rise up and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy): I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go unto thine house. And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay: and departed to his own house, glorifying God. And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying: We have seen strange things to-day. The Creed is said.

And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever: and it left her. And immediately she arose and ministered unto them. Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases, brought them unto him. And he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying: Thou art Christ, the Son of God. And he, rebuking them, suffered them not to speak, for they knew that he was Christ. And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place, and the people sought him, and came unto him: and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. Prayers in Ember Weeks

To be said in Ember Weeks, at the Priest's discretion, for those that are to be admitted into Holy Orders.

ALMIGHTY GOD, our heavenly Father, who hast purchased to thyself an universal Church by the precious Blood of thy dear Son: mercifully look upon the same, and at this time so guide and govern the minds of thy servants the Bishops and Pastors of thy flock, that they may lay hands suddenly on no man, but faithfully and wisely make choice of fit persons to serve in the sacred Ministry of thy Church. And to those which shall be ordained to any holy function give thy grace and heavenly benediction; that both by their life and doctrine they may set forth thy glory, and set forward the salvation of all men. Through.

ALMIGHTY GOD, the giver of all good gifts, who of thy divine providence hast appointed divers Orders in thy Church: give thy grace, we humbly beseech thee, to all those who are to be called to any office and administration in the same; and so replenish them with the truth of thy doctrine, and endue them with innocency of life, that they may faithfully serve before thee, to the glory of thy great Name, and the benefit of thy holy Church. The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the book of the Revelation of blessed John the Apostle. Rev. 4. 1.

IN those days: I looked, and behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said: Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. And immediately I was in the spirit; and behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne: and he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And round about the throne were four and twenty seats; and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold: and out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices. And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven spirits of God. And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind. And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle. And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, the four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying: Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power; for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are, and were created.

Blessed art thou, O Lord God of our fathers: and to be praised and exalted above all for ever. Alleluia.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to John. St. John 3. 1.

AT that time: There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: the same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him: Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him: Verily, verily I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him: How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered: Verily, verily I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth; so is every one that is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus answered and said unto him: How can these things be? Jesus answered and said unto him: Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not; how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man, who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. The Creed is said.

The Lesson from the former EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. 1 Cor. 11. 23.

BRETHREN: For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you: that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said: Take, eat: this is my Body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying: This cup is the new testament in my Blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death, till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the Body and Blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself: not discerning the Lord's Body.

GRADUAL. Ps. 145. The eyes of all wait upon thee, O Lord: and thou givest them their meat in due season. ℣. Thou openest thine hand: and fillest all things living with plenteousness. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. St. John 6. My Flesh is meat indeed, and my Blood is drink indeed: he that eateth my Flesh and drinketh my Blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.

SEQUENCE. Lauda Sion Salvatorem.

LAUD, O Sion, thy Salvation, laud with hymns of exultation Christ, thy King and Shepherd true: Spend thyself, his honour raising, who surpasseth all thy praising; never canst thou reach his due. Sing to-day, the mystery showing of the living, life-bestowing Bread from heaven before thee set; E'en the same of old provided, where the Twelve, divinely guided, at the holy Table met. Full and clear ring out thy chanting, joy nor sweetest grace be wanting to thy heart and soul to-day; When we gather up the measure of that Supper and its treasure, keeping feast in glad array. Lo, the new King's Table gracing, this new Passover of blessing hath fulfilled the elder rite: Now the new the old effaceth, truth revealed the shadow chaseth, day is breaking on the night. What he did at Supper seated, Christ ordained to be repeated, his memorial ne'er to cease: And, his word for guidance taking, bread and wine we hallow, making thus our Sacrifice of peace. This the truth to Christians given—bread becomes his Flesh from heaven, wine becomes his holy Blood. Doth it pass thy comprehending? Yet by faith, thy sight transcending, wondrous things are understood. Yea, beneath these signs are hidden glorious things to sight forbidden: look not on the outward sign. Wine is poured and Bread is broken, but in either sacred token Christ is here by power divine. Whoso of this Food partaketh, rendeth not the Lord nor breaketh: Christ is whole to all that taste. Thousands are, as one, receivers, one, as thousands of believers, takes the Food that cannot waste. Good and evil men are sharing one repast, a doom preparing varied as the heart of man; Doom of life or death awarded, as their days shall be recorded which from one beginning ran. When the Sacrament is broken, doubt not in each severed token, hallowed by the word once spoken, resteth all the true content: Nought the precious Gift divideth, breaking but the sign betideth, he himself the same abideth, nothing of his fulness spent. Lo! the Angels' Food is given to the pilgrim who hath striven; see the children's Bread from heaven, which to dogs may not be cast; Truth the ancient types fulfilling, Isaac bound, a victim willing, Paschal lamb, its life-blood spilling, Manna sent in ages past. O true Bread, good Shepherd, tend us, Jesu, of thy love befriend us, thou refresh us, thou defend us, thine eternal goodness send us in the land of life to see; Thou who all things canst and knowest, who on earth such Food bestowest, grant us with thy Saints, though lowest, where the heavenly Feast thou showest, fellow-heirs and guests to be. Amen. Alleluia.

AT that time: Jesus said unto the multitude of the Jews: My Flesh is meat indeed, and my Blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my Flesh, and drinketh my Blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father, so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead. He that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. The Creed is said.

1st Sunday after Trinity, commonly called the Sunday within the Octave of Corpus Christi

INTROIT. Domine, in tua misericordia. Ps. 13.

O LORD, my trust is in thy mercy: and my heart is joyful in thy salvation: I will sing of the Lord, because he hath dealt so lovingly with me. Ps. ibid. How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord, for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me? ℣. Glory be.

COLLECT.

O GOD, the strength of all them that put their trust in thee, mercifully accept our prayers: and because through the weakness of our mortal nature we can do no good thing without thee, grant us the help of thy grace; that in keeping of thy commandments, we may please thee both in will and deed. The Lesson from the first EPISTLE of blessed John the Apostle. 1 St. John 4. 7.

BELOVED: Let us love one another: for love is of God, and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God towards us, because that God sent his only-begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us: we ought also to love one another. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us; because he hath given us of his Spirit. And we have seen, and do testify, that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. Whosoever shall confess, that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. And we have known, and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love: and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love: but perfect love casteth out fear, because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar. For he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him: that he who loveth God love his brother also.

GRADUAL. Ps. 41. I said: Lord, be merciful unto me: heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee. ℣. Blessed is he that considereth the poor and needy: the Lord shall deliver him in the time of trouble. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 5. Ponder my words, O Lord: consider my meditation. Alleluia.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 16. 19.

AT that time: Jesus spake this parable unto his disciples: There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day. And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate full of sores, and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried: and in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said: Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue: for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said: Son, remember that thou in thy life-time receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they who would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said: I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him: They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said: Nay, father Abraham, but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him: If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

The Lesson from the first EPISTLE of blessed John the Apostle. 1 St. John 3. 13.

BRETHREN: Marvel not, if the world hate you. We know, that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother, abideth in death: whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer. And ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him: how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue, but in deed, and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence towards God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment: That we should believe on the Name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him: and hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

GRADUAL. Ps. 120. When I was in trouble I called upon the Lord: and he heard me. ℣. Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 7. O Lord my God, in thee have I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me. Alleluia.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 14. 16.

AT that time: Jesus spake unto the Pharisees this parable: A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: and sent his servant at supper-time to say to them that were bidden: Come, for all things are now ready. And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him: I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go, and see it: I pray thee, have me excused. And another said: I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee, have me excused. And another said: I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. So that servant came and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry, said to his servant: Go out quickly into the streets, and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. And the servant said: Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. And the lord said unto the servant: Go out into the highways and hedges: and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. For I say unto you, that none of those men which were bidden, shall taste of my supper. The Creed is said.

The Lesson from the former EPISTLE of blessed Peter the Apostle. 1 St. Peter 5. 5.

DEARLY beloved: All of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time; casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant: because your adversary the devil as a roaring lion walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist stedfast in the faith: knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us into his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

AT that time: There drew near unto Jesus all the Publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and Scribes murmured, saying: This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them. And he spake this parable unto them, saying: What man of you having an hundred sheep: if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing: and when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them: Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying: Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I had lost. The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Romans. Rom. 8. 18.

BRETHREN: I reckon, that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory, which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him, who hath subjected the same in hope: because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption, into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth, and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also which have the first-fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body: in Christ Jesus our Lord.

GRADUAL. Ps. 79. Be merciful unto our sins, O Lord: wherefore do the heathen say: Where is now their God? ℣. Help us, O God of our salvation: and for the glory of thy Name, deliver us, O Lord. AT that time: Jesus said to his disciples: Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal, it shall be measured to you again. And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Either how canst thou say to thy brother: Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye. Creed.

DEARLY beloved: Be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing, but contrariwise blessing: knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips, that they speak no guile. Let him eschew evil, and do good: let him seek peace, and ensue it. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? But, and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye. And be not afraid of their terror: neither be troubled. AT that time: As the people pressed upon Jesus, to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, and saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon: Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him: Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless, at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes, and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come, and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying: Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: and so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon: Fear not, from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him. The Creed is said.

The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Romans. Rom. 6. 3.

BRETHREN: Know ye not that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ, were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection. Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him; that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead, is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ: we believe that we shall also live with him: knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more, death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God: through Jesus Christ our Lord.

GRADUAL. Ps. 90. Turn thee again, O Lord, at the last: and be gracious unto thy servants. ℣. Lord, thou hast been our refuge: from one generation to another. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 31. AT that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Ye have heard, that it was said by them of old time: Thou shalt not kill: and whosoever shall kill, shall be in danger of the judgment. But I say unto you: that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca: shall be in danger of the council. But whosoever shall say, Thou fool: shall be in danger of hell-fire. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee: leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother: and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him: lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. BRETHREN: I speak after the manner of men, because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness, and to iniquity unto iniquity: even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things, whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death. ✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Mark. St. Mark 8. 1.

AT that time: The multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them: I have compassion on the multitude: because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat: and if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far. And his disciples answered him: From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness? And he asked them: How many loaves have ye? And they said: Seven. And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them, and they did set them before the people. And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them. So they did eat, and were filled, and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets. And they that had eaten were about four thousand: And he sent them away. The Creed is said.

The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Romans. Rom. 8. 12.

BRETHREN: We are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh: for if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but ye have received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry: Abba Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. And if children, then heirs: heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ: if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

AT that time: Jesus said to his disciples: Beware of false prophets which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves: ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit: but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit: neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. BRETHREN: I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea: and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud, and in the sea: and did all eat the same spiritual meat, and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual rock that followed them: and that rock was Christ. But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them: as it is written: The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth, take heed lest he fall. There hath no temptation taken you, but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 16. 1.

AT that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: There was a certain rich man which had a steward: and the same was accused unto him, that he had wasted his goods. And he called him, and said unto him: How is it that I hear this of thee? Give an account of thy stewardship: for thou mayest be no longer steward. Then the steward said within himself: What shall I do, for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship? I cannot dig, to beg I am ashamed. I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses. So he called every one of his lord's debtors unto him, and said unto the first: How much owest thou unto my lord? And he said: An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him: Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty. Then said he to another: And how much owest thou? And he said: An hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him: Take thy bill, and write fourscore. And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light. And I say unto you: Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness: that when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations. The Creed is said.

BRETHREN: Concerning spiritual gifts, I would not have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed. And that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God, who worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom: to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit: to another faith by the same Spirit: to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit: to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another divers kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But all these worketh that one and the self-same Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

AT that time: When Jesus was come near to Jerusalem, he beheld the city, and wept over it, saying: If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. For the days shall come upon thee: that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round: and keep thee in on every side: and shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation. And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought, saying unto them: It is written, My house is the house of prayer. BRETHREN: I declare unto you the Gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand, by which also ye are saved: if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all, that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures: and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the Scriptures: and that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve. After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once: of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James, then of all the Apostles: and last of all, he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. For I am the least of the Apostles, that am not meet to be called an Apostle, because I persecuted the Church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain. But I laboured more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.

The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself: God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are: extortioners, unjust, adulterers: or even as this Publican. I fast twice in the week: I give tithes of all that I possess. And the Publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven: but smote upon his breast, saying: God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you: This man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased: and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. Creed.

BRETHREN: Such trust have we through Christ to Godward: not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God: who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. But if the ministration of death written and engraven in stones was glorious; so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance, which glory was to be done away: how shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious? For if the ministration of condemnation be glory: much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.

And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears: and he spit, and touched his tongue: and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him: Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. And he charged them that they should tell no man. BRETHREN: To Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not: And to seeds, as of many; but as of one: And to thy seed, which is Christ. And this I say: that the covenant that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise. But God gave it to Abraham by promise. Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come, to whom the promise was made, and it was ordained by Angels in the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator is not a mediator of one: but God is one. Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid. For if there had been a law given, which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. But the Scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

AT that time: Jesus said to his disciples: Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see. For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them: and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. And behold, a certain Lawyer stood up and tempted him, saying: Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him: What is written in the law? how readest thou? And he answering said: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind: and thy neighbour as thyself. And he said unto him: Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live. But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus: And who is my neighbour? And Jesus answering said: A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment: and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance, there came down a certain Priest that way: and, when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and, when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine: and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow, when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him: Take care of him: and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said: He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him: Go, and do thou likewise. BRETHREN: Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit: and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other, so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led by the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past: that they who do such things, shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is: love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. Against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's, have crucified the flesh, with the affections and lusts.

And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Galatians. Gal. 6. 11.

BRETHREN: Ye see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand. As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised, only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh. But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus. Brethren: the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

GRADUAL. Ps. 92. It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord: and to sing praises unto thy Name, O most Highest. ℣. To tell of thy loving-kindness early in the morning, and of thy truth in the night-season. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 95. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. Alleluia.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 6. 24.

AT that time: Jesus said to his disciples: No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other: or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God, and Mammon. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat: and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air; for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns: yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought, can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin. And yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven: shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying: What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? for after all these things do the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness: and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow. For the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. The Creed is said.

BRETHREN: I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you: which is your glory. For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith: that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height: and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Now unto him, that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask, or think, according to the power, that worketh in us, unto him be glory in the Church by Christ Jesus, throughout all ages, world without end. And he said: Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying: that a great Prophet is risen up among us: and that God hath visited his people. BRETHREN: I therefore the prisoner of the Lord beseech you, that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, forbearing one another in love, endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism. One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. ✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 14. 1.

AT that time: As Jesus went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath-day, they watched him. And behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. And Jesus answering spake unto the Lawyers, and Pharisees, saying: Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath-day? And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go. And he answered them, saying: Which of you shall have an ass, or an ox, fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath-day? And they could not answer him again to these things. And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms, saying unto them: When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room, lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him, and he that bade thee and him, come and say to thee: Give this man place: and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room. But when thou art bidden, go, and sit down in the lowest room: that, when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee: Friend, go up hither: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee: for whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased: and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. Creed.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Book of Nehemiah. Neh. 8. 1.

IN those days: All the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate: and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded to Israel. And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month. And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand: and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law. And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people: for he was above all the people: and when he opened it, all the people stood up. And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God: and all the people answered: Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground. And the Levites caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place. So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense: and caused them to understand the reading. And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people: This day is holy unto the Lord your God, mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law. Then he said unto them: Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord; neither be ye sorry: for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

GRADUAL. Ps. 33. Blessed are the people, whose God is the Lord Jehovah: and blessed are the folk, that he hath chosen to him to be his inheritance. ℣. By the word of the Lord were the heavens made: and all the hosts of them by the breath of his mouth.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Mark. St. Mark 9. 17.

AT that time: One of the multitude answered and said: Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit: and wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out, and they could not. He answereth him, and saith: O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? Bring him unto me. And they brought him unto him. And when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him: and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. And he asked his father: How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said: Of a child: and ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him. But if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. Jesus said unto him: If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears: Lord, I believe: help thou mine unbelief. When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him: Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him: and enter no more into him. And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him, and he was as one dead, insomuch that many said: He is dead. But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately: Why could not we cast him out? And he said unto them: This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from Hosea the Prophet. Hos. 14. 1.

THUS saith the Lord God: O Israel, return unto the Lord thy God: for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity. Take with you words, and turn to the Lord; say unto him: Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips. Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses; neither will we say any more to the work of our hands: Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy. I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him. I will be as the dew unto Israel; he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon. His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon. They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon. Ephraim shall say: What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him, and observed him; I am like a green fir tree: from me is thy fruit found. Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? For the ways of the Lord are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.

GRADUAL. Ps. 90. Turn thee again, O Lord, at the last: and be gracious unto thy servants. ℣. Lord, thou hast been our refuge, from one generation to another.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 7. 36.

AT that time: One of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat. And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment: and stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying: This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner. And Jesus answering said unto him: Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith: Master, say on. There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me, therefore, which of them will love him most? Simon answered and said: I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him: Thou hast rightly judged. And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon: Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet. My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. Wherefore I say unto thee: Her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. And he said unto her: Thy sins are forgiven. And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves: Who is this that forgiveth sins also? And he said to the woman: Thy faith hath saved thee: go in peace.

And the flame streamed forth above the furnace forty and nine cubits: and it passed through, and burned those Chaldeans it found about the furnace. And the fire touched the three not at all; neither hurt nor troubled them. Then they, as out of one mouth, praised, glorified, and blessed God in the furnace, saying:

The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Hebrews. Heb. 9. 2.

BRETHREN: There was a tabernacle made, the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread, which is called the sanctuary. And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all: which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; and over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat: of which we cannot now speak particularly. Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God; but into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people: the Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing. Which was a figure for the time then present: in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own Blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

TRACT. Ps. 117. O praise the Lord, all ye heathen: praise him, all ye nations. ℣. For his merciful kindness is ever more and more towards us: and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 13. 6.

AT that time: Jesus spake also this parable unto the multitudes: A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard: Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down: why cumbereth it the ground? And he answering said unto him: Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: and if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down. And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years: and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her: Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath-day, and said unto the people: There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath-day. The Lord then answered him, and said: Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath-day? And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 22. 34.

AT that time: When the Pharisees had heard that Jesus had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. Then one of them, who was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying: Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying: What think ye of Christ? whose Son is he? They say unto him: The Son of David. He saith unto them: How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying: The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy foot-stool? If David then call him Lord, how is he his Son? And no man was able to answer him a word: neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions. Creed.

The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians. Ephes. 4. 17.

BRETHREN: This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk in the vanity of their mind, having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart, who, being past feeling, have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But ye have not so learned Christ, if so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: that ye put off, concerning the former conversation, the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts. And be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Wherefore, putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Be ye angry and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath. Neither give place to the devil: let him that stole, steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth: but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God: whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil-speaking, be put away from you, with all malice. And be ye kind one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

GRADUAL. Ps. 141. Let my prayer be set forth in thy sight, as the incense, O Lord. ℣. And let the lifting up of my hands be an evening sacrifice. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 105. O give thanks unto the Lord, and call upon his Name: tell the people what things he hath done. Alleluia.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 9. 1.

AT that time: Jesus entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. And behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed. And Jesus, seeing their faith, said unto the sick of the palsy: Son, be of good cheer, thy sins be forgiven thee. And behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves: This man blasphemeth. And Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said: Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? For whether is easier, to say: Thy sins be forgiven thee? or to say: Arise, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, then saith he to the sick of the palsy: Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose, and departed to his house. But when the multitude saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, who had given such power unto men. The Creed is said.

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess: but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to yourselves in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord: giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 22. 1.

AT that time: Jesus spake to the chief priests and the pharisees in parables, saying: The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, who made a marriage for his son. And he sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding, and they would not come. Again, he sent forth other servants, saying: Tell them which are bidden: Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: and the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them. But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth, and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burnt up their city. Then saith he to his servants: The wedding is ready, but they who were bidden were not worthy. Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find bid to the marriage. So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all, as many as they found, both bad and good, and the wedding was furnished with guests. And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment. And he saith unto him: Friend, how camest thou in hither, not having a wedding-garment? And he was speechless. Then said the king to the servants: Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen. The Creed is said.

MY brethren: Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood: but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness, and your feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of peace: above all taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked, and take the helmet of salvation: and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit: and watching thereunto with all perseverance, and supplication for all saints: and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the Gospel: for which I am an ambassador in bonds, that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to John. St. John 4. 46.

AT that time: There was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum, When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him: and besought him that he would come down and heal his son: for he was at the point of death. Then said Jesus unto him: Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe. The nobleman saith unto him: Sir, come down ere my child die. Jesus saith unto him: Go thy way, thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way. And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying: Thy son liveth. Then inquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him: Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him: Thy son liveth; and himself believed, and his whole house. This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee. The Creed is said.

BRETHREN: I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, for your fellowship in the Gospel from the first day until now: being confident of this very thing, that he who hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all: because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the Gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace. For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ. And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment: that ye may approve things that are excellent, that ye may be sincere, and without offence, till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ unto the glory and praise of God.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 18. 21.

AT that time: Peter said unto Jesus: Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him: I say not unto thee, until seven times: but until seventy times seven. Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. The servant therefore fell down and worshipped him, saying: Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellow-servants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying: Pay me that thou owest. And his fellow-servant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying: Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. So when his fellow-servants saw what was done, they were very sorry: and came and told unto their lord all that was done. Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him: O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellow-servant, even as I had pity on thee? And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses. The Creed is said.

BRETHREN: We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you: since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints, for the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the Gospel: which is come unto you, as it is in all the world, and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth, as ye also learned of Epaphras, our dear fellow-servant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ, who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit. For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding: that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing: being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God: strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and long-suffering with joyfulness, giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.

GRADUAL. Ps. 44. It is thou, O Lord, that savest us from our enemies: and puttest them to confusion that hate us. ℣. We make our boast of God all day long, and will praise thy Name for ever. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 130. Out of the deep have I called unto thee, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice. Alleluia.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 9. 18.

AT that time: While Jesus spake these things unto John's disciples, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying: My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples. And behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment. For she said within herself: If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and, when he saw her, he said: Daughter, be of good comfort, thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. And when Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, he said unto them: Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand. And the maid arose. And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land. The Creed is said.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from Jeremiah the Prophet. Jer. 23. 5.

IN those days: Jeremiah the Prophet spake, saying: Behold, the days come, saith the Lord: that I will raise unto David a righteous branch: and a king shall reign and prosper: and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, the Lord our righteousness. Therefore behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that they shall no more say: The Lord liveth, which brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt: but: The Lord liveth, which brought up, and which led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north-country, and from all countries whither I had driven them: and they shall dwell in their own land.

GRADUAL. Ps. 44. It is thou, O Lord, that savest us from our enemies: and puttest them to confusion that hate us. ℣. We make our boast of God all day long: and will praise thy Name for ever. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 130. Out of the deep have I called unto thee, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice. Alleluia.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to John. St. John 6. 5.

AT that time: When Jesus then lift up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip: Whence shall we buy bread that these may eat? And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him: Two hundred penny-worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him: There is a lad here, which hath five barley-loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? And Jesus said: Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves: and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples: and the disciples to them that were set down: and likewise of the fishes, as much as they would. When they were filled, he said unto his disciples: Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley-loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said: This is of a truth that Prophet that should come into the world. The Creed is said.
