The Lesson from the latter EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to Timothy. 2 Tim. 4. 1.

Dearly beloved: I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be instant in season, out of season: reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an Evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

GRADUAL. Ps. 92. The righteous shall flourish like a palm-tree: and shall spread abroad like a cedar in Libanus in the house of the Lord. ℣. To tell of thy loving-kindness early in the morning: and of thy truth in the night-season. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Hosea 14. The righteous shall grow as the lily: and flourish for ever before the Lord. Alleluia.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 12. 35.

At that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning; and ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding: that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. Blessed are those servants, whom the Lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through. Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

OFFERTORY. Ps. 89. My truth also and my mercy shall be with him: and in my Name shall his horn be exalted.

COLLECT.

O God, who, in the glorious Transfiguration of thine only-begotten Son, didst confirm the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of the fathers, and in the voice proceeding from the shining cloud didst wondrously foreshow the perfect adoption of all thy sons: mercifully grant, that we, being made fellow-heirs of Christ himself the King of glory, may attain to the partaking of the same his glory in heaven. Through the same.

The Lesson from the latter EPISTLE of blessed Peter the Apostle. 2 St. Peter 1. 16.

Dearly beloved: We have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. We have also a more sure word of prophecy: whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts.

GRADUAL. Ps. 45. Thou art fairer than the children of men: full of grace are thy lips. ℣. My heart is inditing of a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made unto the king. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Wis. 7. He is the brightness of the everlasting light, the unspotted mirror of the power of God, and the image of his goodness. Alleluia.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 17. 1.

At that time: After six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart: and was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus: Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. And behold a voice out of the cloud, which said: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. And Jesus came and touched them, and said: Arise, and be not afraid. And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only. And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying: Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead. The Creed is said.

OFFERTORY. Ps. 112. Riches and plenteousness shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever, alleluia.

SECRET.

We beseech thee, O Lord, that, by the glorious Transfiguration of thine only-begotten Son, thou wouldest vouchsafe to sanctify these our oblations: and by the splendour of his brightness to cleanse us from the defilement of all our iniquities. Through the same.

COMMUNION. St. Matt. 17. Tell the vision to no man until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.

POSTCOMMUNION.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Acts of the Apostles. Acts 4. 8.

In those days: Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them: Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel: if we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole, be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel: that by the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner: neither is there salvation in any other. For there is none other Name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.

Through the same.

PREFACE of Christmas.

COMMUNION. Ibid. All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship thee, O Lord, and shall glorify thy Name: for thou art great and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone, alleluia.

Almighty and everlasting God, who art our Creator and Redeemer, mercifully have respect unto these our prayers: and behold with the favour of thy countenance the sacrifice of our salvation, which we offer unto thy divine majesty, to the honour of the Name of thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; that, by the merits of his glorious Name of Jesus, thy grace may be in such wise shed forth upon us, that being thereby predestined to eternal life, we may evermore rejoice that our names are written in heaven. ✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 14. 25.

At that time: Jesus said unto the multitudes: If any man come to me, and hate not his father and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, saying: This man began to build, and was not able to finish. Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace. So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Book of Ecclesiasticus. Ecclus. 51. 1.

I will thank thee, O Lord and King, and praise thee, O God my Saviour: I do give praise unto thy Name: for thou art my defender and helper, and hast preserved my body from destruction, and from the snare of the slanderous tongue, and from the lips that forge lies, and hast been mine helper against mine adversaries. And hast delivered me, according to the multitude of thy mercies and greatness of thy Name, from the teeth of them that were ready to devour me, and out of the hands of such as sought after my life, and from the manifold afflictions which I had: from the choking of fire on every side, and from the midst of the fire which I kindled not; from the depth of the belly of hell, from an unclean tongue, and from lying words. By an accusation to the king from an unrighteous tongue my soul drew near even unto death, my life was near to the hell beneath. They compassed me on every side, and there was no man to help me: I looked for the succour of men, but there was none. Then thought I upon thy mercy, O Lord, and upon thy acts of old, how thou deliverest such as wait for thee, and savest them out of the hands of the enemies, O Lord our God.

GRADUAL. Ps. 112. He hath dispersed abroad, and given to the poor: and his righteousness remaineth for ever. ℣. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the faithful shall be blessed.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 16. 24.

At that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man shall come in the glory of his Father with his Angels: and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

OFFERTORY. Job 16. My prayer is pure: and therefore I ask that a place may be given to my voice in heaven: for my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high: let my prayer ascend to the Lord.

Brethren: He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly: and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give, not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work, as it is written: He hath dispersed abroad, he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever. Now he that ministereth seed to the sower, both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Book of Ecclesiasticus. Ecclus. 24. 7.

With all these I sought rest, and in whose inheritance shall I abide? So the Creator of all things gave me a commandment: and he that made me caused my tabernacle to rest, and said: Let thy dwelling be in Jacob, and thine inheritance in Israel. He created me from the beginning before the world, and I shall never fail. In the holy tabernacle I served before him: and so was I established in Sion. Likewise in the beloved city he gave me rest, and in Jerusalem was my power. And I took root in an honourable people, even in the portion of the Lord's inheritance. I was exalted like a cedar in Libanus, and as a cypress tree upon the mountains of Hermon. I was exalted like a palm tree in Engaddi, and as a rose plant in Jericho. As a fair olive tree in a pleasant field, and grew up as a plane tree by the water. I gave a sweet smell like cinnamon and aspalathus: and I yielded a pleasant odour like the best myrrh.

Hearken, O daughter, and consider, incline thine ear: so shall the king have pleasure in thy beauty. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Mary is taken up into heaven: the company of the Angels is joyful. In those days: By the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people: and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch. And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them. And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women. Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets: and laid them on beds and couches; that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.

But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations. ✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Mark. St. Mark 6. 17.

At that time: Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife; for he had married her. For John had said unto Herod: It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife. Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not. For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy: and observed him, and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly. And when a convenient day was come, that Herod, on his birthday, made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee; and when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him; the king said unto the damsel: Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. And he sware unto her: Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom. And she went forth, and said unto her mother: What shall I ask? And she said: The head of John the Baptist. And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying: I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist. And the king was exceeding sorry: yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her: and immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head in a charger: and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother. And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse: and laid it in a tomb.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Book of Proverbs. Prov. 8. 22.

The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. When there were no depths, I was brought forth: when there were no fountains abounding with water: before the mountains were settled: before the hills was I brought forth: while as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: when he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: when he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth. Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him: rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth: and my delights were with the sons of men. Now, therefore, hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the Lord.

GRADUAL. Blessed and worshipful art thou, O Virgin Mary: who a maiden undefiled hast our Saviour for thy child. ℣. Virgin Mother of God, the whole world cannot contain him: yet, made man for our sake, hidden he lies in thy womb. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. ✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 1. 26.

At that time: The Angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a Virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the Virgin's name was Mary. And the Angel came in unto her, and said: Hail, thou that art highly favoured: the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying: and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the Angel said unto her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God: and behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a Son, and shalt call his Name JESUS. He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David. And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the Angel: How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the Angel answered and said unto her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee. Therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren: for with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. The Creed is said.

The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Philippians. Phil. 2. 5.

Brethren: Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a Name which is above every name: (Here genuflect) that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth: and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is God, to the glory of God the Father.

At that time: Jesus said unto the multitudes of the Jews: Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. (This he said, signifying what death he should die.) The people answered him: We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou: The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man? Then Jesus said unto them: Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. The Creed is said.

O Lord Jesu Christ, who when the world was waxing cold, to the inflaming of our hearts with the fire of thy love didst renew in the flesh of thy blessed Saint Francis the sacred marks of thy passion: mercifully grant that by his merits and intercession, we may be enabled ever to bear thy Cross, and to bring forth fruits worthy of repentance. Who livest.

The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Galatians. Gal. 6. 14.

Brethren: God forbid that I should glory, save in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus. Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

At that time: Jesus saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him: Follow me. And he left all, rose up, and followed him. And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them. But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying: Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? And Jesus answering said unto them: They that are whole need not a physician: but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

The Lesson from the latter EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. 2 Cor. 4. 1.

Brethren: Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not: but have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the Word of God deceitfully: but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. But if our Gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God, in the face of Jesus Christ.

As Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom. And he saith unto him: Follow me. And he arose, and followed him. And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came, and sat down with him and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples: Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them: They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. But go ye and learn what that meaneth: I will have mercy and not sacrifice. The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Book of the Revelation of blessed John the Apostle. Rev. 12. 7.

In those days: There was war in heaven: Michael and his Angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not: neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven: Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the Blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony: and they loved not their lives unto the death. Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea: for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

At that time: The disciples came unto Jesus, saying: Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, and said: Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoso shall receive one such little child in my Name receiveth me. But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe unto the world because of offences. For it must needs be that offences come: but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh. Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire. Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones: for I say unto you, That in heaven their Angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. The Creed is said.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Acts of the Apostles. Acts 17. 22.

In those days: Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said: Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things: and hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation, that they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us. For in him we live, and move, and have our being: as certain also of your own poets have said: For we are also his offspring. Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. And the times of this ignorance God winked at, but now commandeth all men every where to repent, because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained, whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, and others said: We will hear thee again of this matter. So Paul departed from among them. Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 12. 1.

At that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. For there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed: neither hid that shall not be known. Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light: and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the house-tops. And I say unto you my friends: Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell. Yea, I say unto you: Fear him. Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. Also I say unto you: Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the Angels of God.

The Lesson from the latter EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to Timothy. 2 Tim. 4. 5.

Dearly beloved: Watch thou in all things: endure afflictions, do the work of an Evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: for Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Take Mark and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry. And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus. The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee; and the books, but especially the parchments. Alexander the copper-smith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works. Of whom be thou ware also, for he hath greatly withstood our words.

Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say: Peace be to this house. And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. The Creed is said.

The Lesson from the former EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. 1 Cor. 4. 9.

Brethren: We are made a spectacle unto the world, and to Angels, and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but ye are wise in Christ: we are weak, but ye are strong: ye are honourable, but we are despised. Even unto this present hour we both hunger and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwelling place, and labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless: being persecuted, we suffer it: being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day. I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you: in Christ Jesus our Lord.

GRADUAL. Ps. 79. O let the vengeance of thy servants' blood that is shed be openly shewed. ℣. The dead bodies of thy servants, O Lord, have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the air: and the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the land.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to John. St. John 15. 1.

At that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: I am the true vine: and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine: no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered, and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you: ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Jude the Apostle. St. Jude 1.

Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James. To them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called: mercy unto you, and peace, and love be multiplied. Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you, that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation: ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness: and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. And the Angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.

GRADUAL. Ps. 45. Thou shalt make them princes in all lands: they shall remember thy Name, O Lord. ℣. Instead of thy fathers thou shalt have children: therefore shall the people give thanks unto thee. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 139. Right dear are thy friends unto me, O God, and held in highest honour: their rule and governance is exceeding steadfast. Alleluia.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to John. St. John 15. 17.

At that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: These things I command you, that ye love one another. If the world hate you: ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world: the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember the word that I said unto you: The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you: if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. But all these things will they do unto you for my Name's sake: because they know not him that sent me. If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin. He that hateth me: hateth my Father also. If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father. But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law: They hated me without a cause. But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: and ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning. The Creed is said.

In those days: I John beheld, and lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes: which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne. And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints: and they sung a new song, saying: Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation, and hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many Angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice: Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing, for ever and ever. And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed. And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all. And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: Blessed be ye poor: for yours

is the kingdom of God. Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. Blessed are ye when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Book of the Revelation of blessed John the Apostle. Rev. 7. 2.

In those days: I, John, saw another Angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four Angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth, and the sea, saying: Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand, of all the tribes of the children of Israel. Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Aser were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nephthali were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand. After this I beheld, and lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues: stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands: and cried with a loud voice, saying: Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. And all the Angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders, and the four beasts: and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, saying: Amen. ¶ In Eastertide the Mass Sancti tui is said, from the Common of Martyrs, page F 21, with Prayers, Epistle, and Gospel, as above.

November 2nd, or November 3rd if the 2nd be a Sunday. Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, commonly called All Souls' Day

Printed E326–E327; scan PDF pp. 1190–1191. Rubrics only; the Requiem Mass texts themselves are in the Masses for the Dead section and are not repeated here.

¶ To-day any Priest may celebrate three Masses. But if he celebrate only one Mass it shall be the first: and if he celebrate a Mass with Chant it shall likewise be the first, and in this case he may anticipate the second and third.

AT THE FIRST MASS. The Mass Requiem aeternam is said, being the first Mass for the Departed.

¶ At the first and second Mass, if the Priest be about to celebrate another Mass, when he has consumed the Precious Blood, he does not purify nor cleanse the Chalice, but places it on the Corporal, and covers it with the Pall; then, with hands joined, he says in the midst of the Altar: Grant, O Lord, that what our mouths have taken, etc., and then he washes his fingers in a vessel of water, saying: May thy Flesh which I have taken, etc., and thus he cleanses them. And when he has so done, he removes the Pall and again places the Chalice on the Corporal and covers it, according to custom, first with the linen Purificator, then with the Paten on which is the Host to be consecrated, and lastly with the veil.

AT THE SECOND MASS. The Mass Requiem aeternam as on the Anniversary of the Dead, being the third Mass for the Departed.

¶ At the second and third Mass, the Priest, if he has celebrated the first Mass, when he comes to the Offertory, removes the veil from the Chalice, and places the latter towards the Epistle corner, but not beyond the Corporal; and when he has offered the Host, he does not cleanse the Chalice with the Purificator, but leaving it upon the Corporal, raises it a little, and pours wine and water into it carefully; and then he offers the Chalice, in the accustomed manner, although it has not been entirely cleansed.

AT THE THIRD MASS. The Mass Requiem aeternam, as at Daily Masses for the Dead, being the fourth Mass for the Departed, using the second Collect, Secret, and Postcommunion, namely those for Brethren, Kinsfolk, and Benefactors departed.

Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Philippians. Phil. 3. 17.

Brethren: Be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample. For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction: whose god is their belly: and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things. For our conversation is in heaven: from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself. Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown: so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved. I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord. And I entreat thee also, true yoke-fellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellow-labourers, whose names are in the book of life.

GRADUAL. Ps. 110. The Lord sware, and will not repent: Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchisedech. ℣. The Lord said unto my Lord: sit thou on my right hand. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. This is a priest, whom the Lord hath crowned. Alleluia.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 24. 42.

At that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, that he shall make him ruler over all his goods.

OFFERTORY. Ps. 89. My truth also and my mercy shall be with him: and in my Name shall his horn be exalted.
