Feasts of February
February 1st. ST. IGNATIUS, BISHOP AND MARTYR
INTROIT. Mihi autem absit. Gal. 6. God forbid that I should glory, save in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. Ps. 132. Lord, remember David: and all his trouble. ℣. Glory be.
COLLECT. Almighty God, mercifully look upon our infirmities: that whereas we are afflicted by the burden of our sins, the glorious intercession of thy Martyr and Bishop Saint Ignatius may be our succour and defence. Through. Commemorate St. Bridget, V.
The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Romans. Rom. 8. 35.
Brethren: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors, through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor Angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
GRADUAL. Ecclus. 44. Behold a great priest, who in his days pleased the Lord. ℣. There was none like unto him to keep the law of the most High. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Gal. 2. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me. Alleluia. After Septuagesima, instead of Alleluia and the verse following is said: TRACT. Ps. 21. Thou hast given him his heart's desire: and hast not denied him the request of his lips. ℣. For thou hast prevented him with the blessings of goodness. ℣. Thou hast set a crown of pure gold upon his head.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to John. St. John 12. 24. At that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone:
but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it: and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. If any man serve me, let him follow me: and where I am, there shall also my servant be. If any man serve me, him will my Father honour.
OFFERTORY. Ps. 8. Thou hast crowned him with glory and worship: and hast made him to have dominion of the works of thy hands, O Lord.
SECRET. We beseech thee, O Lord, graciously to accept this our sacrifice which we offer unto thee pleading the merits of thy holy Martyr and Bishop Saint Ignatius: that the same may effectually avail for our succour unto everlasting life. Through. Commemorate St. Bridget, V.
COMMUNION. I am the wheat of Christ: let me be ground by the teeth of beasts, that I may be found pure bread.
POSTCOMMUNION. Grant, we beseech thee, O Lord our God, that like as we whom thou hast made partakers of thy heavenly food do offer unto thee our outward worship: so, by the intercession of Saint Ignatius thy Martyr and Bishop, we may inwardly be profited thereby unto our salvation. Through. Commemorate St. Bridget, V.
On the same day. ST. BRIDGET, VIRGIN Mass Dilexisti from Common, page F 71.
February 2nd. THE PRESENTATION OF CHRIST IN THE TEMPLE, OR THE PURIFICATION OF SAINT MARY THE VIRGIN, COMMONLY CALLED CANDLEMAS DAY
If this Feast shall fall on Septuagesima, Sexagesima, or Quinquagesima Sunday, then shall there only be the Blessing and Distribution of candles and the Procession; and the Mass of the Feast shall be transferred to the next day following, unless any greater Feast fall thereon.
¶ The office being said, the Priest, wearing a purple cope, or without a chasuble (the Ministers being vested in like manner), shall go to bless the candles, which shall be set in the middle afore the Altar, or at the Epistle corner, and, his hands being joined, shall say in the tone appointed for use on common days:
℣. The Lord be with you. ℟. And with thy spirit.
Let us pray. COLLECT. O Lord holy, Father almighty, everlasting God, who hast made all things out of nothing, and hast appointed that the labours of bees should be formed into wax by thine ordinance: who didst likewise as on this day fulfil the prayers of thy righteous servant Simeon: we humbly beseech thee; that thou wouldest vouchsafe, by the power of thy holy Name, and at the intercession of blessed Mary ever-Virgin, whose festival we this day devoutly celebrate, and of all thy Saints, to bless
and sanctify these candles for the use of men, and for their protection both in body and soul in all perils of land or sea: hear, O Lord, we humbly pray thee, from thy holy heaven and from the throne of thy glory the voice of this thy people, that seeketh to bear them forth to thy glory and to sing thy praises: and we humbly beseech thee that thou wouldest have mercy on all them that call upon thee, whom thou hast redeemed with the precious Blood of thy dear Son: Who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. ℟. Amen.
Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, who as on this day didst suffer thy only-begotten Son to be presented in the temple and to be received in the arms of Saint Simeon: we humbly beseech thy mercy; that like as we thy servants, taking these candles do seek to light them and bear them to the glory of thy Name, so thou wouldest vouchsafe to bless and sanctify the same: that we being made worthy of offering them unto thee, our Lord and our God, and being enkindled with the holy flame of thy most gracious charity, may be found meet to be presented before thee in the temple of thy glory. Through the same Christ our Lord. ℟. Amen.
Let us pray. O Lord Jesu Christ, who art the true light that lightenest every man that cometh into the world: we beseech thee to pour out thy blessing upon these candles, and sanctify them with the light of thy grace; and mercifully grant, that even as they with their outward flame do scatter
the darkness of night; so our hearts being inflamed with the inward brightness of thy Holy Spirit may be delivered from all blindness of iniquity: that the eyes of our souls being enlightened may discern such things as are pleasing unto thee and profitable unto us for our salvation; that finally after the darkness and dangers of this world we may attain in the end to light everlasting. Through thee, O blessed Jesu, Redeemer of the world, who in the unity of the blessed Trinity livest and reignest God, world without end. ℟. Amen.
Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, who by the mouth of Moses thy servant didst command the children of Israel to bring pure olive oil for the lamps to burn always before thy face: we beseech thee to pour the blessing of thy grace on these candles; that like as they shed forth on us their outward beams, so of thy bounteous goodness the light of thy Holy Spirit may never fail to enlighten us inwardly in our souls. Through … in the unity of the same Holy Spirit. ℟. Amen.
Let us pray. O Lord Jesu Christ, who as on this day appearing among men in the substance of our flesh wast presented by thy parents in the temple: whom Simeon in his old age, being enlightened by the light of thy Spirit, knew and blessed, taking thee in his arms: mercifully grant; that we, being enlightened and instructed by the grace of the same Spirit, may know thee truly in our minds and love thee faithfully with all our hearts. Who livest and reignest with the Father in the unity
of the same Spirit ever one God, world without end. ℟. Amen.
¶ The prayers being ended, the Celebrant shall set incense in the censer; then shall he sprinkle the candles thrice with holy water, saying the Antiphon Thou shalt purge me, but without singing and not saying the Psalm: and he shall cense them thrice. Then shall the first of the Priests that are present approach the altar, and from him shall the Celebrant take his candle, neither genuflecting nor kissing his hand. And afterwards the Celebrant standing in the midst afore the Altar, turning to the people, delivers the candles first to the first of the Priests from whom he received the candle himself, and then to the Deacon and Subdeacon in their vestments; and thereafter to the Priests and Deacons, if any be present, according to their order; and finally to the people; all genuflecting and kissing the candle and the hand of the Celebrant, excepting the Bishops if any be present. And when he beginneth to deliver the candles, the Choir shall sing:
Antiphon. St. Luke 2. To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Cant. Ibid. Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word. Then shall be repeated the whole Antiphon: To be a light, which shall be repeated in like manner after each verse. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation. Ant. To be a light. Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people. Ant. To be a light.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Ant. To be a light.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Ant. To be a light.
This being done shall be sung this Antiphon:
Ps. 44. O Lord, arise, help us: and deliver us for thy Name's sake.
Ps. ibid. O God, we have heard with our ears: our fathers have declared unto us. ℣. Glory be.
Then shall be repeated the Antiphon O Lord, arise. Then shall the Priest say: Let us pray.
¶ And if it be on any day after Septuagesima, not being a Sunday, the Deacon shall say:
Let us bow the knee. ℟. Arise.
COLLECT. We beseech thee, O Lord, mercifully to hear the prayers of thy people: that this observance, whereby we do thee outward honour year by year, may by the light of thy grace bring forth fruit inwardly in our souls. Through Christ our Lord. ℟. Amen.
¶ Here followeth the Procession. And first the Celebrant shall set incense in the censer: and thereafter the Deacon turning about to the people shall say: Let us go forth in peace. And the Choir shall answer: In the Name of Christ. Amen. And the Thurifer shall go first with smoking censer: and after him the Subdeacon vested and bearing the Cross in the midst between two Acolytes with lighted torches: then shall follow the Clergy after their order; and last the Celebrant with the Deacon on his left, all bearing lighted candles in
their hands: and the Antiphons following shall be sung.
Antiph. O Sion, adorn thy bride-chamber, and receive Christ thy King: greet Mary who is the gate of heaven: for she beareth the King of the glory of the new light: she remaineth a Virgin, yet beareth in her arms a Son begotten before the morning star: whom Simeon took in his arms declaring to all nations that he is Lord of life and death, and Saviour of the world.
Another Antiph. St. Luke 2. It was revealed unto Simeon by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ: and when they brought the child into the temple, then took he him up in his arms and blessed God and said: Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace.
℣. When his parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him according to the custom of the law, then took he him up in his arms.
And as they enter the Church shall be sung:
℣. They offered for him unto the Lord a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons: * As it is written in the law of the Lord.
℣. When the days of Mary's purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought Jesus to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord. As it is written in the law of the Lord.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it is written in the law of the Lord.
¶ The Procession being ended, the Celebrant and Ministers, laying aside their purple vestments, shall put on white for the Mass. And all shall hold
lighted candles in their hands while the Gospel is read and from the Consecration to the Communion. But if the Mass be of the Sunday, the candles shall not be lighted.
AT THE MASS INTROIT. Suscepimus. Ps. 48. We have waited, O God, for thy loving-kindness in the midst of thy temple: according to thy Name, O God, so is thy praise unto the world's end: thy right hand is full of righteousness. Ps. ibid. Great is the Lord and highly to be praised: in the city of our God, even upon his holy hill. ℣. Glory be.
COLLECT. Almighty and everliving God, we humbly beseech thy Majesty: that, as thy only-begotten Son was this day presented in the temple in substance of our flesh; so we may be presented unto thee with pure and clean hearts, by the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
The Lesson for the EPISTLE from Malachi the Prophet. Mal. 3. 1. Thus saith the Lord God: Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple; even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in. Behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts: but who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? For he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: and he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he shall purify the sons of
Levi, and purge them as gold and silver: that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness. Then shall the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years: and I will come near to you to judgment, and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false-swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me: saith the Lord of hosts.
GRADUAL. Ps. 48. We have waited, O God, for thy loving-kindness in the midst of thy temple: according to thy Name, O Lord, so is thy praise unto the world's end. ℣. Like as we have heard so have we seen in the city of our God, even upon his holy hill. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. The old man bare the young child in his arms: yet was the young child the old man's king. Alleluia. After Septuagesima shall be omitted Alleluia and the verse following, and in place thereof shall be said: TRACT. St. Luke 2. Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word. ℣. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation. ℣. Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people. ℣. To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 2. 22. At that time: When the days of Mary's purification, according to the law of Moses, were accomplished, they brought Jesus to Jerusalem, to
present him to the Lord, as it is written in the law of the Lord: Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord: and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple, And when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said: Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation: Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people: A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.* And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him. And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother: Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against, yea, a sword shall pierce through thine own soul also, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. And there was one Anna a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity. And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise
unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem. And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. The Creed is said.
OFFERTORY. Ps. 45. Full of grace are thy lips: because God hath blessed thee for ever, and world without end.
SECRET. O Lord, we beseech thee mercifully to hear our prayers: and that these gifts which we offer unto thy divine Majesty may be an acceptable offering in thy sight, do thou shew forth on us the succour of thy loving-kindness. Through. PREFACE of Christmas.
COMMUNION. St. Luke 2. It was revealed unto Simeon by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Anointed.
POSTCOMMUNION. Through. ¶ To-day no Votive Mass of Christ our Lord may be said.

The Lesson from the former EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. 1 Cor. 1. 26. Brethren: Ye see your calling, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: but God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise: and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: that
no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: that, according as it is written: He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
GRADUAL. Ps. 46. God shall help her with his countenance: God is in the midst of her, therefore shall she not be removed. ℣. The rivers of the flood shall make glad the city of God: the holy place of the tabernacle of the most Highest. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 119. I will speak of thy testimonies, also, even before kings: and will not be ashamed. Alleluia. After Septuagesima instead of Alleluia and the verse following is said: TRACT. Ps. 126. They that sow in tears: shall reap in joy. ℣. They that now go on their way weeping, and bear forth good seed. ℣. They shall doubtless come again with joy, and bring their sheaves with them.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 19. 3. At that time: The Pharisees came unto Jesus, tempting him, and saying: Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? And he answered and said unto them: Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said: For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. They say unto him: Why did Moses then command to give a writing of
divorcement, and to put her away? He saith unto them: Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. His disciples say unto him: If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. But he said unto them: All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given. For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

that, at the intercession of blessed Agatha thy Virgin and Martyr, we may thereby be made worthy to rejoice in thy everlasting protection. Through.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 10. 1. At that time: The Lord appointed other seventy also: and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them: The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say: Peace be to
this house: and if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall return to you again. And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you: and heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them: The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Book of the Revelation of blessed John the Apostle. Rev. 11. 19. The temple of God was opened in heaven: and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament; and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail. And there appeared a great wonder in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars. And the Angel came in unto her, and said: Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying: and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. governance is exceeding steadfast. Ps. ibid. Lord, thou hast searched me out and known me: thou knowest my down-sitting and mine uprising. ℣. Glory be.
COLLECT. O Almighty God, who into the place of the traitor Judas didst choose thy faithful servant Matthias to be of the number of the twelve Apostles: grant that thy Church, being always preserved from false Apostles, may be ordered and guided by faithful and true pastors. Through. Commemoration of the Feria, if in Lent.
The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Acts of the Apostles. Acts 1. 15. In those days: Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said: (the number of the names together were about an hundred and twenty): Men and brethren, this Scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus: for he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity, and falling headlong he burst asunder in the midst: and all his bowels gushed out. And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem, insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood. For it is written in the book of Psalms: Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and, His bishoprick let another take. Wherefore, of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same
day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection. And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed, and said: Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen; that he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven Apostles.
GRADUAL. Ps. 139. Right dear are thy friends, O God, and held in highest honour: their rule and governance is exceeding steadfast. ℣. If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand of the sea. TRACT. Ps. 21. Thou hast given him his heart's desire: and hast not denied him the request of his lips. ℣. For thou shalt prevent him with the blessings of goodness. ℣. And shalt set a crown of pure gold upon his head.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 11. 25. At that time: Jesus answered and said: I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered unto me of my Father. And no man knoweth the Son, but the Father: neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my
yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. The Creed is said.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Book of Wisdom. Wis. 7. 7. Wherefore I prayed, and understanding was given me: I called upon God and the spirit of wisdom came to me: I preferred her before sceptres and thrones, and esteemed riches nothing in comparison of her. Neither compared I unto her any precious stone: because all gold in respect of
her is as a little sand, and silver shall be counted as clay before her. I loved her above health and beauty, and chose to have her instead of light: for the light that cometh from her never goeth out. All good things together came to me with her, and innumerable riches in her hands, and I rejoiced in them all because wisdom goeth before them, and I knew not that she was mother of them. I learned diligently, and do communicate her liberally; I do not hide her riches. For she is a treasure unto men that never faileth: which they that use become the friends of God, being commended for the gifts that come from learning. The Creed is said.

The Lesson from the latter EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to Timothy. 2 Tim. 4. 1. Dearly beloved: I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be instant in season, out of season: reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an Evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
GRADUAL. Ps. 110. The Lord sware, and will not repent: Thou art a priest for ever after the
order of Melchisedech. ℣. The Lord said unto my Lord: Sit thou on my right hand.
TRACT. Ps. 112. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord: he hath great delight in his commandments. ℣. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the faithful shall be blessed. ℣. Riches and plenteousness shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 5. 13. At that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: Ye are the salt of the earth. But if the salt have lost its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Creed.
OFFERTORY. Ps. 89. My truth also and my mercy shall be with him: and in my Name shall his horn be exalted.
SECRET.
Grant, we beseech thee, Almighty God: that this oblation, which thou hast instituted, to be a sacrifice for the remission of the sins of all the world, may at the intercession of blessed Gregory be made profitable unto us thy servants. Through.
COMMUNION. St. Luke 12. A faithful and wise steward, whom his Lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season.
POSTCOMMUNION. O God, who didst raise thy blessed Bishop Gregory to be made in his righteousness the equal of thy saints: mercifully grant; that we, which observe this festival in his remembrance, may follow after the pattern of his conversation. Through.

Through the same. Commemoration of the Feria in Lent. EPISTLE. The righteous will give his heart. From the Common, page F 52.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 10. 23. At that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: When they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another. For verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come. The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master: and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household? Fear them not therefore. For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the house-tops. And fear not them which kill the body,
but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. The Creed is said.
SECRET. Look down, O Lord, we pray thee, on this undefiled oblation, which we do here present unto thee: and grant; that by the merits of thy blessed Confessor and Bishop Cyril, we may ever seek earnestly to receive the same in purity of heart. Through.
POSTCOMMUNION. O Lord Jesu Christ, we beseech thee, that the Sacrament of thy Body and Blood, which we have now received, may at the intercession of thy blessed Bishop Cyril, so sanctify our hearts and understandings: that we may be made worthy to be partakers of the nature of thy Godhead. Who livest and reignest.

He sanctified him in his faithfulness and meekness, and chose him out of all men. He made him to hear his voice, and brought him into the dark cloud, and gave him commandments before his face, even the law of life and knowledge.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 1. 26. At that time: And in the sixth month: The Angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a Virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David, and the Virgin's name was Mary. And the Angel came in unto her, and said: Hail, thou that
art highly favoured: the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him she was troubled at his saying: and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the Angel said unto her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God: and behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a Son, and shalt call his Name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest, and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the Angel: How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the Angel answered and said unto her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee. Therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren: for with God nothing shall be impossible. The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Book of Wisdom. Wisdom 10. 10. The Lord guided the righteous in right paths, and shewed him the kingdom of God, and gave him knowledge of holy things: made him rich in his travels, and multiplied the fruit of his labours. In the covetousness of such as oppressed him he stood by him, and made him rich. He defended him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those that lay in wait; and in a sore conflict he gave him the victory, that he might know that godliness is stronger than all. When the righteous was sold wisdom forsook him not, but delivered him from sin: she went down with him into the pit, and left him not in bonds, till she brought him the sceptre of the kingdom, and power against those that oppressed him: as for those that had accused him, she shewed them to be liars, and gave him perpetual glory. She delivered the righteous people and blameless seed from the nation that oppressed
them. She entered into the soul of the servant of the Lord, and withstood dreadful kings in wonders and signs. And she rendered to the righteous a reward of their labours.
GRADUAL. Ps. 18. It is God that girdeth me with strength of war: and maketh my way perfect. ℣. He teacheth mine hands to fight: and mine arms shall break even a bow of steel. TRACT. Ibid. For this cause I will give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the Gentiles, and sing praises unto thy Name. In Eastertide: Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. 1 Sam. 25. The Lord hath preserved thine hand: because thou fightest the battles of the Lord. Alleluia. ℣. Ps. 144. Blessed be the Lord my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight. Alleluia. Out of Eastertide: GRADUAL. Ps. 18. It is God that girdeth me with strength of war: and maketh my way perfect. ℣. He teacheth mine hands to fight: and mine arms shall break even a bow of steel. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Thou hast given me the defence of thy salvation: thy right hand also shall hold me up. Alleluia.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 6. 6. At that time: It came to pass also on another sabbath, that Jesus entered into the synagogue and taught. And there was a man whose right
hand was withered. And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day: that they might find an accusation against him. But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand: Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. Then said Jesus unto them: I will ask you one thing, Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good or to do evil? to save life or to destroy it? And looking round upon them all, he said unto the man: Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other. And they were filled with madness, and communed with another, what they might do to Jesus. Creed.

Friday after Passion Sunday. THE SEVEN SORROWS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
INTROIT. Stabant juxta. St. John 19. There stood by the Cross of Jesus his Mother and his Mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Salome, and Mary Magdalene. ℣. Jesus saith unto his Mother: Woman, behold thy Son; then saith he to the disciple: Behold thy Mother. ℣. Glory be.
COLLECT. O God, in whose passion, according to the prophecy of Simeon, a sword of sorrow did pierce the most loving soul of thy glorious Mother, the Virgin Mary: mercifully grant; that we, who here devoutly call to mind the suffering whereby she was pierced, may, by the glorious merits and prayers of all the saints that have faithfully stood beneath the Cross, obtain with gladness the benefits of thy passion. Who livest. Commemoration of the Feria. In Votive Masses the following is said:
COLLECT. O Lord Jesu Christ, we pray thee: that thy Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose sacred soul was in the hour of thy passion pierced
by a sword of sorrow; may both now and in the hour of our death stand before thee to obtain for us the succour of thy mercy. Who livest.
The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Book of Judith. Judith 13. 17. The Lord hath blessed thee by his power, because by thee he hath brought to nought the enemies of thy people. O daughter, blessed art thou of the most high God, above all the women upon the earth. And blessed be the Lord God which hath created the heavens and the earth: because he hath so magnified thy name this day, that this thy confidence shall not depart from the heart of men, which remember the power of God for ever, for whom thou hast not spared thy life for the affliction of our nation, but hast revenged our ruin, walking a straight way before our God.
GRADUAL. Mournful and weeping art thou, O Virgin Mary; who standest by the Cross of the Lord Jesus thy Son, the Redeemer. ℣. Virgin Mother of God, the whole world cannot contain him; yet made man the Author of our life endures the torment of the Cross. TRACT. There stood by the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ holy Mary, Queen of heaven, and Lady of the World, mournful and weeping. ℣. Lam. 1. All ye that pass by, behold and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow. In Votive Masses throughout the year. GRADUAL. Mournful and weeping art thou, O Virgin Mary; who standest by the Cross of the Lord Jesus thy Son, the Redeemer. ℣. Virgin Mother of God, the whole world cannot contain him; yet
made man the Author of our life endures the torment of the Cross.
Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. There stood by the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ holy Mary, Queen of heaven, and Lady of the World, mournful and weeping. Alleluia.
In Eastertide.
Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. There stood by the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ holy Mary, Queen of heaven and Lady of the World, mournful and weeping, alleluia. ℣. Lam. 1. All ye that pass by, behold and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow. Alleluia.
SEQUENCE. Stabat Mater dolorosa. To be omitted in Votive Masses. By the Cross her station keeping, Stood the mournful Mother weeping, Where he hung, her dying Lord. For her soul, of joy bereavéd, Torn with anguish, deeply grievéd, Felt the sharp and piercing Sword. O, how sad and sore distresséd Then was she, that Mother blesséd Of the sole-begotten One. Deep the woe of her affliction When she saw the Crucifixion Of her ever-glorious Son. Who, on Christ's dear Mother gazing, Torn by anguish so amazing, Born of woman, would not weep?
Who, on Christ's dear Mother thinking,
Such a cup of sorrow drinking,
Would not share her sorrow deep?
For his people's sins chastiséd,
She her Jesus saw despiséd,
Torn with nails, with thorns entwined,
Saw her Son from judgment taken
And in death by all forsaken
Till his spirit he resigned.
Mother, fount of all devotion,
Stir in me thy grief's emotion,
Let my tears be joined with thine.
Let my heart be always burning,
Still for love of Jesus yearning,
Let his will be found in mine.
True repentance, Mother, win me;
Print my Saviour's wounds within me,
Brand them on my stubborn heart.
As he bought, through tribulation,
In his Passion, my salvation,
Let me bear therein my part.
Let me mourn with thee beside him
For the sins which crucified him,
While my life remains in me.
Take beneath the Cross my station,
And in all thy desolation
So unite myself with thee.
Virgin, great beyond all other,
Turn not from me, gentle Mother,
Let me too bewail thy Son;
Let my soul, his death declaring,
His unsparing Passion sharing,
Count his bruises one by one.
Let the Five Wounds penetrate me:
May the Cross inebriate me
And thy Son's most precious Blood:
Lest I burn in hell's damnation,
Virgin, be my consolation
At the judgment-seat of God.
Jesu, when earth's troubles leave me,
Through thy Mother's prayers receive me
To the crown of victory;
When my body lies forsaken,
May my soul by him be taken
Into heaven's high company. Amen.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to John. St. John 19. 25. At that time: There stood by the Cross of Jesus his Mother, and his Mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his Mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his Mother: Woman, behold thy Son. Then saith he to the disciple: Behold thy Mother. And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. The Creed is said.

And if it cannot be celebrated on that Saturday, it is omitted for that year.

Through. In Lent, Commem. of Feria, with its Gospel at the end.
SECRET. Grant, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that at the intercession of blessed Richard thy Confessor and Bishop, the gifts which we offer in the sight of thy divine majesty may obtain for us grace to serve thee in this life, and bring us in the end to everlasting glory. Through.
POSTCOMMUNION. O Lord, who didst bestow upon blessed Richard thy Confessor and Bishop grace to be a faithful steward of thy most holy mysteries: grant, we beseech thee; that the same may accomplish in us, which have received them, the effectual work of our salvation. Through.
April 4th. ST. AMBROSE, BP., CONF., & DOCT.
INTROIT. In medio Ecclesiae. Ecclus. 15. In the midst of the congregation he opened his mouth: and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding: he clothed him with a robe of glory. Ps. 92. It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord: and to sing praises unto thy Name, O most Highest. ℣. Glory be.
COLLECT. O God by whose providence Saint Ambrose was sent to guide thy people in the way of everlasting salvation: grant, we beseech thee; that as we have learned of him the doctrine of life on earth, so we may be found worthy to have him for our advocate in heaven. Through. Commemoration of the Feria, if in Lent.
The Lesson from the latter EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to Timothy. 2 Tim. 4. 1. Dearly beloved: I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word, be instant in season, out of season: reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears, and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
GRADUAL. Ecclus. 44. Behold a great priest, who in his days pleased the Lord. ℣. There was none like unto him to keep the law of the most High. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 110. The Lord sware and will not repent: thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedech. Alleluia. In Eastertide, instead of the Gradual, is said: Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 110. Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedech. Alleluia. ℣. This is a priest whom the Lord hath crowned. Alleluia.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 5. 13. At that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. For verily I say unto you, till heaven
and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
SECRET. Almighty and everlasting God, grant, we pray thee, that these oblations which we here present unto thy divine majesty, may by the intercession of Saint Ambrose, thy Confessor and Doctor, be profitable unto us, for the attainment of everlasting salvation. Through. Commemoration of the Feria, if in Lent.
COMMUNION. Ibid. I have sworn once by my holiness: his seed shall endure for ever: and his seat is like as the sun before me. He shall stand fast evermore as the moon: and as the faithful witness in heaven.
POSTCOMMUNION. Almighty God, who hast suffered us here to be partakers of this Sacrament of our salvation: grant, we beseech thee; that we who have presented our oblations unto thy majesty, in remembrance of blessed Ambrose thy Confessor and Bishop, may at all times receive the succour of his intercession. Through. Commemoration of the Feria, if in Lent.
April 11th. ST. LEO THE GREAT, POPE, CONFESSOR, & DOCTOR
Mass In medio from Common, page F 49, except the Prayers, which are taken from the previous Common, Sacerdotes tui, page F 44, and the Gospel, which is the same as that for the Feast of St. Peter's Chair at Rome, on Jany. 18th. The Creed is said.
April 14th. ST. JUSTIN, MARTYR
INTROIT. Narraverunt. Ps. 119. The proud have digged pits for me, which are not after thy law: but I will speak of thy testimonies also even before kings, and will not be ashamed, alleluia, alleluia. Ps. ibid. Blessed are those that are undefiled in the way, and walk in the law of the Lord. ℣. Glory be.
COLLECT. O God, who by the foolishness of the Cross didst wondrously teach thy blessed Martyr Saint Justin an excellent knowledge of Christ Jesus: grant that by his intercession, we being delivered from the deceitfulness of all false doctrine, may be firmly grounded in thy true religion. Through the same.
The Lesson from the former EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. 1 Cor. 1. 18. Brethren: The preaching of the Cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us
which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God; it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: but we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness: but unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.
Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. 1 Cor. 3. The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, for it is written: The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain. Alleluia. ℣. Phil. 3. Yea, doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus, my Lord. Alleluia. Outside Eastertide. GRADUAL. 1 Cor. 3. The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, for it is written: The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain. ℣. ibid. 1. I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Phil. 3. Yea, doubtless,
and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus, my Lord. Alleluia.
After Septuagesima, instead of Alleluia and the verse following is said:
TRACT. 1 Cor. 2. For I have determined not to know anything among you save Jesus Christ and him crucified. ℣. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the world unto our glory. ℣. Which none of the princes of this world knew. For had they known it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 12. 2. At that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: There is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light, and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the house-tops. And I say unto you, my friends: Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings? and not one of them is forgotten before God: but even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. Also I say unto you: Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the Angels of God.
OFFERTORY. 1 Cor. 2. For I have determined
not to know anything among you save Jesus Christ, and him crucified, alleluia.
SECRET. O God, who didst strengthen thy blessed Martyr Justin earnestly to defend thy wondrous mysteries against the slanders of the ungodly: grant, we pray thee; that these our oblations may be acceptable in thy sight. Through.
COMMUNION. 2 Tim. 4. There is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day, alleluia.
POSTCOMMUNION. O Lord, who hast refreshed us with this heavenly food: we humbly pray thee, that following the teaching of thy blessed Martyr Justin, we may continue steadfastly to shew forth our thankfulness for the gifts that we have received in the same. Through.
April 19th. ST. ALPHEGE, BISHOP & MARTYR
Mass Protexisti from Common, p. F 16, except:
COLLECT. O God, who didst adorn blessed Alphege, devoutly confessing thy most holy Name, with the dignity of priesthood and the palm of martyrdom: mercifully grant, that by his intercession we may find such succour in thy sight, that we may be found worthy to rejoice with him in everlasting felicity. Through.
[No feast heading in the book: the following Lesson stands in book order between the Alphege Collect (E119) and the Anselm heading (E120) below, and is transcribed here in that order without assignment to either feast.]
The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Hebrews. Heb. 5. 1.
Brethren: Every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way: for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.
April 21st. ST. ANSELM, BP., CONF., & DOCT.
Mass In medio Ecclesiae from the Common, page F 49, with Creed. ¶ If any of the following feasts, being a Double or Semi-double, should fall on a Rogation Day, a commemoration of the Rogation Days is made in all Masses, according to the proper Rubric, except in the conventual Mass of the Feast, if another conventual or sung Mass of the Rogation Days be said. So too, on the Wednesday, before the commemoration of the Rogation Days, is made a commemoration of the Vigil of the Ascension, except in the conventual Mass of the Feast or of the Rogation Days. And in Masses in which a commemoration of the Feria or the Vigil has been made, the last Gospel on the Tuesday will be of the Rogation Days; on the Wednesday of the Vigil. If, however, these same feasts should fall on the Tuesday or the Wednesday, unless they be Doubles of the 1st or 2nd class, the conventual Mass is read out of Choir, and the conventual Mass of the Feria or of the Vigil is said in Choir.

COLLECT. O God, who makest us glad with the merits and intercession of blessed George thy Martyr: mercifully grant; that we who by his aid implore thy bounty, may by the abundance of thy grace receive the same. Through.
The Lesson from the latter EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to Timothy. 2 Tim. 2. 8.
Dearly beloved: Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel, wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds: but the word of God is not bound. Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, persecutions, afflictions: which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra: what persecutions I endured; but out of them all the Lord delivered me. Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus, shall suffer persecution.
Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 89. O Lord, the very heavens shall praise thy wondrous works: and thy truth in the congregation of the saints. Alleluia. ℣. Ps. 21. Thou hast set a crown of pure gold upon his head, O Lord. Alleluia.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to John. St. John 15. 1. At that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: I am the true vine: and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away; and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine: no more can ye except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches:
he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered, and men gather them and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you: ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. The Creed is said throughout the Octave.
OFFERTORY. Ps. 89. O Lord, the very heavens shall praise thy wondrous works: and thy truth in the congregation of the saints, alleluia, alleluia.

POSTCOMMUNION. We humbly beseech thee, Almighty God: that we whom thou dost vouchsafe to regenerate with thy holy sacraments; may, at the intercession of blessed George thy Martyr, continually serve thee in all virtuous and godly living. Through. ¶ If this Feast be celebrated after Pentecost, the Mass will be In virtute tua from the Common of a Martyr outside Eastertide, page F 9, with the prayers
as above. The second Collect (unless the commemoration of another Saint is to be made) will be of the saints. The third ad libitum.
April 25th. ST. MARK THE EVANGELIST, THE GREATER LITANIES
Station at St. Peter's. At the Procession the Rogation Mass is said (page D 46) without commemoration of St. Mark: and if the Feast of St. Mark is transferred, yet the Procession is not transferred, unless this Feast occur on Easter Day: it is then transferred to the following Tuesday.

COLLECT. O Almighty God, who hast instructed thy holy Church with the heavenly doctrine of thy Evangelist Saint Mark: give us grace, that, being not like children carried away with every blast of vain doctrine, we may be established in the truth of thy holy Gospel. Through.
The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians. Ephes. 4. 7. Brethren: Unto every one of us is given grace, according to the measure of the gift
of Christ. Wherefore he saith: When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) And he gave some Apostles, and some Prophets, and some Evangelists, and some Pastors and Teachers: for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God; unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: that we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness; whereby they lie in wait to deceive: but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: from whom the whole body fitly joined together, and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body, unto the edifying of itself in love.
Alleluia.

If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you: ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. The Creed is said.

Forasmuch as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suf-
fered in the flesh hath ceased from sin. ℣. 2 Cor. 4. Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. ℣. Heb. 12. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the Cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say: Peace be to this house: and if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall return to you again.

Who livest.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Book of Genesis. Gen. 49. 22.
Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well: whose branches run over the wall. The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him. But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob: from thence is the Shepherd, the stone of Israel. Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee, and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts and of the womb. The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.
Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. From whatsoever tribulation they shall call upon me, I will hear them, and I will be their defender for ever. Alleluia. ℣. Grant us, O Joseph, to walk in innocency: and ever to be safe under thy protection. Alleluia.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 3. 21. At that time: When all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened: and the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him: and a voice came from heaven, which said: Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being, as was supposed, the son of Joseph. The Creed is said.
OFFERTORY. Ps. 147. Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem: for he hath made fast the bars of thy gates, and hath blessed thy children within thee, alleluia, alleluia.
SECRET. O Lord, who seest that we do put our trust in the patronage of the Spouse of thy most holy Mother: we pray thee, that thou wouldest so train our hearts to despise all things earthly, that we may in perfect charity cleave unto thee, the only true God. Who livest. PREFACE of St. Joseph.
COMMUNION. St. Matt. 1. And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ, alleluia, alleluia.
POSTCOMMUNION. We beseech thee, O Lord our God, that we whom thou hast refreshed with the river of thy heavenly bounty, may by thee be enabled so to rejoice in the protection of thy blessed Saint Joseph: that, by his merits and intercession, we may be made partakers of thy heavenly glory. Through. ¶ Within Octave Mass is said as on the Feast, with 2nd Collect of St. Mary, the 3rd for Church or Chief Bishop. On the Octave Day itself, Mass is said as on the Feast. ¶ If this Feast has to be transferred after Pentecost, the Mass is said as above, except that the Alleluias are omitted from Introit, Offertory, and Communion, and the Gradual as below is substituted. [The substituted Gradual, and any further votive notes for the Patronage, stand on PDF 1000 (E136 in part), the first page of the May block, and are NOT transcribed in this file.
