Votive Masses of St. Joseph
Mass is said as above, but the Alleluias are omitted from Introit, Offertory, and Communion. Outside Eastertide, instead of the Alleluia and the verse following, is said:
GRADUAL. Ps. 21. Lord, thou hast prevented him with the blessings of goodness: thou hast set a crown of pure gold upon his head. ℣. He asked life of thee, and thou gavest him a long life, even for ever and ever.
Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Grant us, O Joseph, to walk in innocency: and ever to be safe under thy protection. Alleluia.
And after Septuagesima, instead of this last Alleluia with its verse, is said:
TRACT. Ps. 112. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord: he hath great delight in his commandments. ℣. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the faithful shall be blessed. ℣. Riches and plenteousness shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.
Feasts of May

Printed E 136–E 139; scan PDF pp. 1000–1003.
INTROIT. Clamaverunt. Nehem. 9. 28.
They cried unto thee, O Lord, in the time of their misery: and thou didst hear them from thy holy heaven, alleluia, alleluia. Ps. 33. Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: for it becometh well the just to be thankful. ℟. Glory be.
COLLECT.
O Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: grant us perfectly to know thy Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life; that following the steps of thy holy Apostles Saint Philip and Saint James, we may steadfastly walk in the way that leadeth to eternal life. Through.

The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed James the Apostle. St. James 1. 1.
James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations: knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering: for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways. Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: but the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass: and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life: which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 89. O Lord, the very heavens shall praise thy wondrous works: and thy truth in the congregation of the saints. Alleluia. ℣. St. John 14. Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? He that hath seen me hath seen my Father also. Alleluia.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to John. St. John 14. 1.
At that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: Let not your heart be troubled. Ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you: I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you: I will come again, and receive you unto myself, that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him: Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him: I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. Philip saith unto him: Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him: Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father. And how sayest thou then: Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself. But the Father, that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me. Or else believe me for the very works' sake. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also, and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my Name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my Name, I will do it. The Creed is said.
OFFERTORY. Ps. 89. O Lord, the very heavens shall praise thy wondrous works: and thy truth in the congregation of the saints, alleluia, alleluia.

The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians. Ephes. 4. 7.
Brethren: Unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Wherefore he saith: When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive: and gave gifts unto men. Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things. And he gave some apostles, and some prophets, and some evangelists, and some pastors, and teachers, for the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.
GRADUAL. Ps. 45. Thou shalt make them princes in all lands: they will remember thy Name, O Lord. ℣. Instead of thy fathers thou shalt have children, therefore shall the people give thanks unto thee.
Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. St. John 14. Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? He that hath seen me hath seen the Father. Alleluia.
After Septuagesima, instead of the Alleluia and the verse following, is said:
TRACT. Ps. 126. They that sow in tears, shall reap in joy. ℣. He that now goeth on his way weeping, and beareth forth good seed. ℣. He shall doubtless come again with joy and bring his sheaves with him.

INTROIT. In medio Ecclesiae. Ecclus. 15.
In the midst of the congregation he opened his mouth: and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding: he clothed him with a robe of glory, alleluia, alleluia. Ps. 92. We beseech thee, O Lord, graciously to hear the prayers which we offer unto thee on this feast of thy holy Confessor and Bishop Saint Athanasius: that, like as he was found worthy to do thee faithful service, so by the succour of his merits, we may be delivered from the bonds of the sins which we have committed. The Lesson from the latter EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. 2 Cor. 4.
Brethren: We preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake: for God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels: that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed: we are perplexed, but not in despair: persecuted, but not forsaken: cast down, but not destroyed: always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake: that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. So then death worketh in us, but life in you. We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written: I believed, and therefore have I spoken: we also believe, and therefore speak: knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you.
Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 110. Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchisedech. Alleluia. ℣. St. James 1. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried he shall receive the crown of life. Alleluia.
After Eastertide is said:
GRADUAL. Ecclus. 44. Behold a great priest, who in his days pleased the Lord. ℣. There was none like unto him to keep the law of the most High. Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. St. James 1. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried he shall receive the crown of life. Alleluia.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 10. 23.
At that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: When they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another. For verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come. The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master: and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household? Fear them not therefore. For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the house-tops. And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather
fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. The Creed is said.

The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Philippians. Phil. 2. 5.
Brethren: Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a Name which is above every name: (here genuflect) that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth: and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 96. Tell it out among the heathen: that the Lord hath reigned from the Tree. Alleluia. ℣. Sweetest wood, sweetest iron, that bare so sweet a burthen: which alone was counted worthy to sustain the King of heaven and its Lord. Alleluia.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to John. St. John 3. 1.
At that time: There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him: Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him: Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him: How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered: Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh: and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee: Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus answered and said unto him: How can these things be? Jesus answered and said unto him: Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen, and ye believe not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not: how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man, which is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness; even so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. The Creed is said.

The Lesson from the former EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Thessalonians. 1 Thess. 2. 2.
Brethren: We were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention. For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile, but as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel: even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts. For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know; nor a cloak of covetousness: God is witness; nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others; when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ: but we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children. So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls; because ye were dear unto us. For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.
GRADUAL. Ps. 132. I will deck her priests with health: and her saints shall rejoice and sing. ℣. There shall I make the horn of David to flourish: I have ordained a lantern for mine Anointed.
Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 110. The Lord sware and will not repent: thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedech. Alleluia.

Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 110. The Lord sware, and will not repent: thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedech. Alleluia. ℣. Ecclus. 45. The Lord loved him and adorned him: he clothed him with a robe of glory. Alleluia.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 10. 1.
At that time: The Lord appointed other seventy also: and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them: The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say: Peace be to this house: and if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall return to you again. And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you: and heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them: The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

Therefore I purposed to take wisdom with me to live with me; knowing that she would be a counsellor of good things, and a comfort in cares and grief. For her sake I shall have estimation among the multitude, and honour with the elders though I be young: and I shall be found of a quick conceit in judgment, and shall be admired in the sight of great men. When I hold my tongue they shall bide my leisure, and when I speak they
shall give good ear unto me, if I talk much they shall lay their hands upon their mouth. Moreover, by the means of her I shall obtain immortality, and leave behind me an everlasting memorial to them that come after me. I shall set the people in order, and the nations shall be subject unto me. Horrible tyrants shall be afraid, when they do but hear of me. I shall be found good among the multitude, and valiant in war.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Book of Ecclesiasticus. Ecclus. 44. 1.
Let us now praise famous men, and our fathers that begat us. The Lord hath wrought great glory by them through his great power from the beginning. Such as did bear rule in their kingdoms, men renowned for their power, giving counsel by their understanding, and declaring prophecies: leaders of the people by their counsels, and by their knowledge of learning meet for the people, wise and eloquent in their instructions: such as found out musical tunes, and recited verses in writing: rich men furnished with ability, living peaceably in their habitations. All these were honoured in their generations, and were the glory of their times. There be of them, that have left a name behind them, that their praises might be reported. And some there be, which have no memorial; who are perished, as though they had never been; and are become as though they had never been born; and their children after them. But these were merciful men, whose righteousness hath not been forgotten.
With their seed shall continually remain a good inheritance: and their children are within the covenant. Their seed standeth fast, and their children for their sakes. Their seed shall remain for ever, and their glory shall not be blotted out. Their bodies are buried in peace; but their name liveth for evermore. The people will tell of their wisdom, and the congregation will shew forth their praise.
GRADUAL. 1 St. Peter 4. Rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings, that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. ℣. If ye be reproached for the Name of Christ, happy are ye: for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you.
Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Is. 66. I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream. Alleluia.
In Eastertide the Gradual is omitted, and in place thereof is said:
Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Is. 66. Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love the Lord. Alleluia. ℣. When ye see this, your heart shall rejoice: and the hand of the Lord shall be known toward his servants. Alleluia.

At that time: Jesus, seeing the multitudes, went up into a mountain, and when he was set, his disciples came unto him, and he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Acts of the Apostles. Acts 11. 22.
In those days: Tidings of these things came unto the ears of the Church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch. Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad: and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost, and of faith. And much people was added unto the Lord. Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul: and when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the Church, and taught much people: and the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch. And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar. Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the
brethren which dwelt in Judaea. Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth. But I have called you friends: for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. Brethren: We are made a spectacle unto the world, and to Angels, and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but ye are wise in Christ: we are weak, but ye are strong: ye are honourable, but we are despised. Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwelling-place, and labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless: being persecuted, we suffer it: being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day. And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. The Lesson from the latter EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to Timothy. 2 Tim. 4. 1.
Dearly beloved: I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be instant in season, out of season: reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an Evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

The Lord guided the righteous man in right paths, shewed him the kingdom of God, and gave him knowledge of holy things: made him rich in his travels, and multiplied the fruit of his labours. In the covetousness of such as oppressed him he stood by him, and made him rich. He defended him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those that lay in wait, and in a sore conflict gave him the victory; that he might know that godliness is stronger than all. When the righteous was sold, wisdom forsook him not, but delivered him from sin: she went down with him into the pit, and left him not in bonds, till she brought him the sceptre of the kingdom, and power against those that oppressed him: as for those that had accused him, she shewed them to be liars, and gave him perpetual glory, O Lord our God.

At that time: Jesus answered and said unto the Saducees: Ye do err, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage: but are as the Angels of God in heaven. But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying: I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine. But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together: then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying: Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

In those days: The word of the Lord came unto me, saying: Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee: and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Then said I: Ah, Lord God: behold, I cannot speak, for I am a child. But the Lord said unto me: Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee: and whatsoever I command thee, thou shalt speak. Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee, to deliver thee, saith the Lord. Then the Lord put forth his hand and touched my mouth: and the Lord said unto me: Behold I have put my words in thy mouth: see, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, and to build, and to plant: saith the Lord Almighty.

✠ The Beginning of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 1. 5.
There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years. And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course, according to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense. And there appeared unto him an Angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the Angel said unto him: Fear not, Zacharias, for thy prayer is heard: and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Comfort ye, comfort ye my people: saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a high-way for our God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. The voice said: Cry. And he said: What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth, because the Spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever. O Zion, that bringest good tidings: get thee up into the high mountain. O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings: lift up thy voice with strength, lift it up, be not afraid. Say unto the cities of Judah: Behold your God. Behold the Lord God will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. ✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 1. 57.
Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered, and she brought forth a son. And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her: and they rejoiced with her. And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child: and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. And his mother answered and said: Not so, but he shall be called John. And they said unto her: There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called: and he asked for a writing-table, and wrote, saying: His name is John. And they marvelled all. And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed: and he spake, and praised God. And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill-country of Judaea. And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying: What manner of child shall this be? And the hand of the Lord was with him. And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying: Blessed be the Lord God of Israel: for he hath visited and redeemed his people. And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us: in the house of his servant David. As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets: which have been since the world began. That we should be saved from our enemies: and from the hand of all that hate us. To perform the mercy promised to our fathers: and to remember his holy covenant. The oath which he sware to our father Abraham: that he would grant unto us. That we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies: might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. And thou, child, shalt be called the Prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways. To give knowledge of salvation unto his people: by the remission of their sins. Through the tender mercy of our God: whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us. To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death: to guide our feet into the way of peace. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit: and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. And he leaping up stood, and walked: and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God. The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Acts of the Apostles. Acts 12. 1.
In those days: Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the Church. And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. And, because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. Then were the days of unleavened bread. And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him: intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. Peter therefore was kept in prison. But prayer was made without ceasing of the Church unto God for him. And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison. And behold, the Angel of the Lord came upon him: and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying: Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands. And the Angel said unto him: Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him: Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. And he went out and followed him, and wist not that it was true which was done by the Angel: but thought he saw a vision. When they were past the first and second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city: which opened to them of his own accord. And they went out, and passed on through one street: and forthwith the Angel departed from him. And when Peter was come to himself, he said: Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his Angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

And Simon Peter answered and said: Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And I say also unto thee: That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee keys of the kingdom of heaven. Brethren: But I certify you that the Gospel which was preached of me is not after man: for I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion: how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: and profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers. But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace, to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen: immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me: but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days: but other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord's brother. Now the things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not.

The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Hebrews. Heb. 9. 11.
Brethren: Christ being come an High Priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building: neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own Blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: how much more shall the Blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit, offered himself without spot to God, purge your consciences from dead works to serve the living God? And for this cause he is the Mediator of the new testament: that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance: in Christ Jesus our Lord.
GRADUAL. 1 St. John 5. This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ: not by water only, but by water and blood. ℣. There are three that bare record in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. And there are three that bare witness in earth: the Spirit, and the Water, and the Blood: and these three agree in one.
Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater. Alleluia.

The blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you: and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you. Alleluia.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to John. St. John 19. 30.
At that time: When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said: It is finished. And he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. The Jews therefore, because it was the Preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate, that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then came the soldiers; and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs; but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out Blood and Water. And he that saw it bare record: and his record is true. Creed.

Behold he cometh, leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills: my beloved is like a roe or a young hart. Behold he standeth behind our wall, he looketh forth at the windows, shewing himself through the lattice. My beloved spake and said unto me: Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away. For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of the singing of birds is come: and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land: the fig tree putteth forth her green figs: and the vines with the tender grape give forth good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away: O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice: for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely.

And Mary arose in those days: and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda: and entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb: and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: and she spake out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she that believed, for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord: And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. The Creed is said.

The Lesson from the latter EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to Timothy. 2 Tim. 3. 14.
Dearly beloved: Continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been as-
sured of: knowing of whom thou hast learned them, and that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word, be instant in season, out of season: reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
GRADUAL. Ps. 122. For my brethren and companions' sakes, I will wish thee prosperity. ℣. Ps. 37. Keep innocency, and take heed unto the thing that is right: for that shall bring a man peace at the last.

But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep: the hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. I am the good shepherd; and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. At that time: Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray. And when the evening was come, he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying: It is a spirit. And they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying: Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. And Peter answered him and said: Lord, if it be thou, bid me
come unto thee on the water. And he said: Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid: and, beginning to sink, he cried, saying: Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him: O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying: Of a truth thou art the Son of God. The Creed is said.

I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets: and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not. The watchmen that go about the city found me. To whom I said: Saw ye him whom my soul loveth? It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother's house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me. I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please. Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death: jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.

At that time: One of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat. And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment: and stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying: This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner. And Jesus answering said unto him: Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith: Master, say on. There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? Simon answered and said: I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him: Thou hast rightly judged. And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon: Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them
with the hairs of her head. Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet. My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. Wherefore I say unto thee: Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. And he said unto her: Thy sins are forgiven. And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves: Who is this that forgiveth sins also? And he said to the woman: Thy faith hath saved thee: go in peace. Creed.

O ye priests of the Lord, bless ye the Lord: O ye holy and humble men of heart, bless ye the Lord. Ibid. O all ye works of the Lord, bless ye the Lord: praise him and magnify him for ever. ℣. Glory be.
COLLECT.

The Lesson from the former EPISTLE of blessed Peter the Apostle. 1 St. Peter 5. 1.
Dearly beloved: The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ: and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly: not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind: Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist steadfast in the faith: knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
GRADUAL. Ps. 89. I have found David my servant, with my holy oil have I anointed him: my hand shall hold him fast, and my arm shall strengthen him. ℣. The enemy shall not be able to do him violence, the son of wickedness shall not hurt him.
Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 110. The Lord sware and will not repent: thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedech. Alleluia.
✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 22. 24.
At that time: There was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. And Jesus said unto them: The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations. And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me: that ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom: and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
OFFERTORY. Ps. 89. My truth also and my mercy shall be with him: and in my Name shall his horn be exalted.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Acts of the Apostles. Acts 11. 27 and 12.
In those days: Came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch. And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit, that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar. Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea. Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul. Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the Church. And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. And, because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 20. 20.
At that time: There came to Jesus the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. And he said unto her: What wilt thou? She saith unto him: Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. But Jesus answered and said: Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him: We are able. And he saith unto them; Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father. And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren. But Jesus called them unto him, and said: Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; and whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. The Creed is said.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Luke. St. Luke 10.
And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you: and heal the sick that are therein; and say unto them: The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. The Creed is said.
