The Proper Masses of the Saints

[Printed E 1; scan PDF p. 865]

THE PROPER MASSES OF THE SAINTS

The Masses contained in this Proper, with the exceptions of those of peculiar Mysteries of our Lord, or of Feasts of our Lady (unless otherwise noted), or those of St. Joseph on March 19th and of SS. Peter and Paul, are also said as votives. But when they are so used, unless it be otherwise noted, after the Epistle, the Gradual with the Verse following or Tract, or, in Eastertide, the Alleluia, with its Verses, when they are not contained in the Mass, are supplied from the appropriate Common. But for Martyrs, in Eastertide, the Mass Protexisti, or Sancti tui, as the case may be, is said, with the Prayers, Epistle, and Gospel, from the Proper of the Saint. However, in every Prayer the words On this day, yearly, etc., should be omitted wherever they occur, and the expressions birthday, festivity, changed to commemoration, memory. So also, in place of the Introit Gaudeamus is said the Introit from the appropriate Common, and the Alleluias are omitted out of Eastertide, when they have been added to the Introit, Offertory, and Communion on account of the Paschal Season.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Book of Ecclesiasticus. Ecclus. 44. 22.

THE blessing of the Lord was upon the head of the righteous. Therefore the Lord gave him

an heritage; and divided his portion among the twelve tribes. And he found favour in the sight of all flesh. And the Lord magnified him so that his enemies stood in fear of him. By his words he caused the wonders to cease: he made him glorious in the sight of kings, and gave him a commandment for his people, and shewed him his glory. He sanctified him in his faithfulness and meekness, and chose him out of all men. He gave him commandments before his face, even the law of life and knowledge, and exalted him. An everlasting covenant he made with him: the Lord beautified him with ornaments of righteousness: and clothed him with a robe of glory.

GRADUAL. Ps. 139. Right dear are thy friends, O God, and held in highest honour: their rule and governance is exceeding steadfast. ℣. If I should count them: they are more in number than the sand of the sea.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to John. St. John 1. 35.

AT that time: John stood, and two of his disciples. And looking upon Jesus as walked, he saith: Behold the Lamb of God. And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them: What seek ye? They said unto him: Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master), where dwellest thou? He saith unto them: Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was

Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him: We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said: Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is, by interpretation, A stone. The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him: Follow me. Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him: We have found him, of whom Moses in the Law, and the Prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth the son of Joseph. And Nathanael said unto him: Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him: Come and see. Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him: Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile. Nathanael saith unto him: Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him: Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. Nathanael answered and saith unto him: Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel. Jesus answered and said unto him: Because I said unto thee: I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these. And he saith unto him: Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the Angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

November 30th. ST. ANDREW THE APOSTLE

[Printed E 5; scan PDF p. 869, continued]

INTROIT. Mihi autem nimis. Ps. 139.

RIGHT dear are thy friends unto me, O God, and held in highest honour: their rule and governance is exceeding steadfast. Ps. ibid. Lord, thou hast searched me out, and known me: thou

COLLECT.

ALMIGHTY GOD, who didst give such grace unto thy holy Apostle Saint Andrew, that he readily obeyed the calling of thy Son Jesus Christ, and followed him without delay: grant unto us all, that we, being called by thy holy Word, may forthwith give up ourselves obediently to fulfil thy holy commandments. Through the same.

The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Romans. Rom. 10. 9.

BRETHREN: If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness: and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture saith: Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him, in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him, of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the Gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the Gospel. For Esaias saith: Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and

[Printed E 7; scan PDF p. 871]

hearing by the Word of God. But I say: Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. But I say: Did not Israel know? First Moses saith: I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you. But Esaias is very bold, and saith: I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me. But to Israel he saith: All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

GRADUAL. Ps. 45. Thou shalt make them princes in all lands: they shall remember thy Name, O Lord. ℣. Instead of thy fathers thou shalt have children: therefore shall the people give thanks unto thee.

Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. The Lord loved Andrew as a sweet savour. Alleluia.

And going on from thence he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him. The Creed is said.

The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Hebrews. Heb. 13. 7.

BRETHREN: Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation. Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and to-day, and for ever. Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein. We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle. For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips

[Printed E 13; scan PDF p. 877]

giving thanks to his Name. But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves. For they watch for your souls, as they that must give account.

GRADUAL. Ps. 89. I have found David my servant: with my holy oil have I anointed him: my hand shall hold him fast, and my arm shall strengthen him. ℣. The enemy shall not be able to do him violence, the son of wickedness shall not hurt him.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 25. 14.

AT that time: Jesus spake this parable unto his disciples: A certain man travelling into a far country called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth and hid his lord's money. After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying: Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.

[Printed E 14; scan PDF p. 878]

His lord said unto him: Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. He also that had received two talents came and said: Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents; behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. His lord said unto him: Well done, good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Book of Proverbs. Prov. 8. 22.

THE Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. When there were no depths, I was brought forth: when there were no fountains abounding with water: before the mountains were

[Printed E 20; scan PDF p. 884]

settled, before the hills was I brought forth: while as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: when he established the clouds above, when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: when he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth. Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him: rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men. Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the Lord.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to John. St. John 20. 24.

AT that time: Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said unto him: We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them: Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them. Then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said: Peace be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas: Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands: and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him: My Lord, and my God. Jesus saith unto him: Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. And many other signs truly did Jesus in

And hast delivered me, according to the multitude of thy mercies and greatness of thy Name, from the teeth of them that were ready to devour me, and out of the hands of such as sought after my life, and from the manifold afflictions which I had: from the choking of fire on every side, and from the midst of the fire which I kindled not; from the depth of the belly of hell, from an unclean tongue, and from lying words. By an accusation to the king from an unrighteous tongue my soul drew near even unto death, my life was near to the hell beneath. They compassed me on every side, and there was no man to help me: I looked for the succour of men, but there was none. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made: Behold, the bridegroom cometh: go ye out to meet him. The Lesson for the EPISTLE from the Acts of the Apostles. Acts 9. 1.

IN those days: Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, and desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues: that, if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. And, as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven. And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him: Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said: Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said: I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And he, trembling and astonished, said: Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him: Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man. And Saul arose from the earth, and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man. But they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus. And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink. And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias:

[Printed E 44; scan PDF p. 908]

and to him said the Lord in a vision: Ananias. And he said: Behold, I am here, Lord. And the Lord said unto him: Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight: and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for behold, he prayeth, and hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias, coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight. Then Ananias answered: Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem: and here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy Name. But the Lord said unto him: Go thy way; for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my Name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel. For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my Name's sake. And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and, putting his hands on him, said: Brother Saul, the Lord, (even Jesus that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest,) hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith: and arose, and was baptized. And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus. And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. But all that heard him were amazed, and said: Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this Name in Jerusalem: and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests? But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.

And Jesus said unto them: Verily I say unto you, that ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my Name's sake, shall receive an hundred-fold, and shall inherit everlasting life. But many that are first shall be last, and the last shall be first. Creed.

OFFERTORY. Ps. 139. Right dear are thy friends unto me, O God: their rule and governance is exceeding steadfast.

DEARLY beloved: Whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother: for this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? because his own works were evil: and his brother's righteous. Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. We know that we have passed from death unto life because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death: whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer. And ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

INTROIT. Domine in virtute tua. Ps. 21.

COLLECT.

BLESSED Lord, in whose sight the death of thy saints is precious: we magnify thy Name for thine abundant grace bestowed upon our martyred Sovereign; by which he was enabled so cheerfully to follow the steps of his blessed Master and Saviour, in a constant meek suffering of all barbarous indignities, and at last resisting unto blood; and even then, according to the same pattern, praying for his murderers. Let his memory, O Lord, be ever blessed among us; that we may follow the example of his courage and constancy, his meekness and patience, and great charity. And grant, that this

our land may be freed from the vengeance of his righteous blood, and thy mercy glorified in the forgiveness of our sins: and all for Jesus Christ his sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Who liveth.

The Lesson from the former EPISTLE of blessed Peter the Apostle. 1 St. Peter 2. 13.

DEARLY beloved: Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him, for the punishment of evil doers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well-doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: as free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Honour all men: Love the brotherhood: Fear God: Honour the king. Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults ye shall take it patiently? but if when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently; this is acceptable with God. For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps; who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth.

GRADUAL. Ps. 112. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord: he hath great delight in his commandments. ℣. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the faithful shall be blessed.

Alleluia, alleluia. ℣. Ps. 21. Thou shalt set, O Lord, a crown of pure gold upon his head. Alleluia.

[Printed E 51; scan PDF p. 915]

After Septuagesima (omitting Alleluia, and the verse following) is said:

TRACT. Ibid. Thou hast given him his heart's desire: and hast not denied him the request of his lips. ℣. For thou shalt prevent him with the blessings of goodness. ℣. Thou shalt set a crown of pure gold upon his head.

✠ The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL according to Matthew. St. Matt. 21. 33.

AT that time: Jesus spake this parable unto the multitude of the Jews, and the chief priests: There was a certain householder which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a wine-press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country. And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other servants, more than the first: and they did unto them likewise. But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying: They will reverence my son. But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves: This is the heir, come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. When the Lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen? They say unto him: He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons. Creed.

OFFERTORY. St. Matt. 7. 12. Whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you, even so do unto them: for this is the law and the prophets.

SECRET.

O LORD, our heavenly Father, who didst not punish us as our sins have deserved, but hast in the midst of judgment remembered mercy: we acknowledge it thine especial favour, that, though for our many and great provocations thou didst suffer thine Anointed blessed King Charles the First [as on this day] to fall into the hands of violent and blood-thirsty men, and barbarously to be murdered by them: yet thou didst not leave us for ever, as sheep without a shepherd, but by thy gracious providence didst miraculously preserve the undoubted heir of his crowns, our then gracious Sovereign King Charles the Second, from his bloody enemies, hiding him under the shadow of thy wings, until their tyranny was overpast; and didst bring him back in thy good appointed time to sit upon the throne of his father, and together with the Royal Family didst restore to us our ancient Government in Church and State. For these thy great and unspeakable mercies we render to thee our most humble and unfeigned thanks; beseeching thee, still to continue thy gracious protection over the whole Royal Family, and to grant to our gracious Sovereign King N. a long and a happy reign over us: so that we that are thy people will give thee thanks for ever, and will alway be shewing forth thy praise from generation to generation. Through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour; our only Mediator and Advocate.

COMMUNION. St. Matt. 16. If any man will
