Editorial notes

This page transcribes The Anglican Missal (London: Society of SS. Peter and Paul, 1921; 1922 inserts edited by Francis Burgess) from the Internet Archive scan of the Trinity College, Toronto copy. The transcription covers scan PDF pp. 21–1604 in full. The following resolutions were adopted in the published text; they are recorded here so a future editor can revisit them with better evidence.

  • Order pagination. The Order title leaf (scan PDF p. 499) carries only a foot mark "P" while the following leaves are printed C2–C56. "P" is treated as a printer's signature mark, not a competing series: signature marks P and Q appear only at gathering and title leaves, and every numbered leaf carries a C folio. The series letter is therefore given as C. One point remains unexplained: why the starred mark falls at C 5 (four pages after P) and at C 33 (eight pages after Q).
  • Sursum corda dialogue. The dialogue is printed in full before the first Preface and precedes each Preface as printed. In the transcription it is given in full once, under the Prefaces heading, and not repeated before every Preface. Every Preface's own rubric, proper text, and Sanctus are given in full.
  • Musical Prefaces. The shared dialogue and frame are given in full once and cross-referred from every Preface with its exact printed page range; ferial middles identical to solemn middles are cross-referred with any difference stated.
  • Musical Preface footnote markers. Six markers stand at the foot of leaves C vij, C xxxj, C xxxix, C lxiij, C lxxj, and C lxxix (scan PDF pp. 565, 589, 597, 621, 629, 637). No footnote text appears on those leaves or the following leaves. The markers are recorded as printed facts; their texts, if they exist, would require a lookup outside this range, possibly in the text Ordinary/Canon leaves or a companion chant book.
  • Canon title-leaf opening chant. The musical Canon section (scan PDF p. 651) begins in the middle of a chant whose parent prayer is not named on the leaf. It is recorded as printed.
  • Hebrews 5 Lesson (E 120). A Lesson from Hebrews 5 stands in book order between the Alphege Collect (E 119) and the Anselm heading (E 120), with no feast heading of its own. It is transcribed in that order, unassigned to either feast. Whether it belongs to the Alphege Common (Protexisti, F 16) or is a misplaced Anselm preface is not settled from this copy.
  • Rank and state letters. No key to the rank/state letters was found in this copy, although the front matter, kalendar pages, and text were searched for it. Expansions, where asserted, follow ordinary Roman missal kalendar usage and are not presented as the book's own key. A fuller copy's front matter (printed pp. xviii–xxi) may supply the key.
  • Tuesday in Easter Week, Gradual (D 13). The scan reads "who hung upon us the Tree". The text is transcribed as printed; the sense suggests "for us", but the printed reading stands unless a second copy confirms an emendation.
  • Section titles. The section pages use the titles under which they were published (seasonal and quarterly splits for the two long Propers; the Musical Ordinary and Canon as its own page). Titles may be revised; the contents list above follows the book's own order regardless of title.
