Research note

Research date: 24 October 2026. 1 Timothy, Titus, Acts 20, and 1 Corinthians 7 were inspected in the KJV. The Ordinal’s preface was checked on the Church of England website. Nancy Vyhmeister’s 2005 article was read directly as an opposing account of marital fidelity and eligibility. A. Andrew Das’s Cambridge abstract was inspected only to establish the thesis he explicitly states. The full Das article was not available for inspection and no claim is made to have assessed its complete argument. The publisher displays inconsistent publication metadata; the citation therefore uses the DOI and identifies the inspected abstract without supplying an uncertain publication date.

Editorial note

The article does not claim a scholarly consensus about the one-wife phrase. It separates its male wording from the argument for universal exclusion, and does not equate each New Testament overseer with a later diocesan bishop. Questions about remarriage and the conduct of adult children remain matters requiring further pastoral and exegetical treatment. The Greek marital expressions were checked in the inspected scholarly discussions rather than through a newly conducted manuscript study. The patristic quotation reproduced within Vyhmeister’s article is not quoted or independently relied upon here.
